October 28, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

A Tahmeed bus traveling from Nairobi to Mombasa was completely destroyed by fire at Kiunduani, Kibwezi, in Makueni County on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, with all passengers escaping without injuries.

Morning Fire Engulfs Bus Along Highway

The incident happened at around 5 am at the Dakota Complex, located between Makindu town and Kiunduani along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, kenyans.co.ke reported. Witnesses stated that the bus developed mechanical problems early in the journey.

The driver noticed the mechanical fault and steered the vehicle off the road. This maneuver allowed the passengers to evacuate safely before the flames spread and engulfed the entire bus.

Images obtained from the scene showed thick smoke surrounding the vehicle while passengers and other road users watched from a safe distance. The fire eventually reduced the passenger bus to a burnt metallic skeleton, destroying all luggage and personal belongings stored on board.

Authorities Investigate Cause of Bus Fire

Fire response teams eventually brought the blaze under control, though the vehicle was burnt beyond repair. Rescuers cleared the debris while motorists were forced to seek alternative routes as transport along the key transit corridor experienced temporary disruptions.

The mangled wreck was towed to the nearest police station as local authorities commenced preliminary investigations. Investigators have yet to establish the specific trigger for the blaze, and management at Tahmeed Bus Company had refrained from releasing any official remarks regarding the occurrence as the article went to press.

Common factors that trigger bus fires include electrical faults, fuel leaks, overheating components, and mechanical failures. Transport authorities and investigators continue to examine the wreckage to determine the precise origin of the blaze.

Prior Incidents Along the Transit Route

That October 28 emergency follows an earlier incident roughly two months prior, when a separate Tahmeed vehicle went up in flames during the morning hours of September 4, 2026, within Voi, Taita Taveta County. In that incident, a Nairobi-bound or Mombasa-bound bus burst into flames shortly after two of its rear tires burst, forcing passengers to evacuate safely without recording any casualties.
