Zhao Xintong Returns to Action After Record-Breaking Snooker Championship Win
Zhao Xintong, the reigning World Snooker Champion, has made a triumphant return to the professional circuit, defeating Chris Wakelin in the opening round of his first ranking event of the 2025/26 season. This marks Zhao’s first competitive outing as his historic victory at the Crucible, where he secured a ยฃ500,000 prize.
Following his monumental win, which saw him defeat Ronnie O’Sullivan in the final, Zhao returned to China for the summer. He was met with a hero’s welcome and has been enjoying the rewards of his success. When asked by the World snooker Tour (WST) about his post-championship spending,Zhao remained playfully secretive, stating,”I have bought something. But what I bought is a secret.”
However, Zhao may have inadvertently revealed his intentions shortly after the World Championship. Amidst the media frenzy surrounding his victory, he admitted to a fondness for watches, mentioning, “I do like watches, different brands, too.”
The 28-year-old has amassed over ยฃ1.3 million in career earnings. His manager, Victoria shi, plays a crucial role in keeping him grounded. “Let him enjoy [the prize money],” Shi commented. “But if he enjoys it too much, I will tell him off. He is the first Asian world champion and that is huge. But it is indeed my job to make sure he stays grounded.” This disciplined approach has been evident in Zhao’s relatively low-profile demeanor despite his newfound fame. When questioned about the most famous person to congratulate him, Zhao identified China’s double Olympic champion table tennis star, Wang Chuqin. He acknowledged having a close-knit circle of friends and fellow Chinese snooker players, rather than a wide network of famous acquaintances.
Zhao’s return to the tour comes after a 20-month ban stemming from a match-fixing inquiry. As he embarks on his first season back, many will be keenly observing whether his significant winnings from the World Championship find their way onto his wrist in the form of a new timepiece.
