Trump Expresses Frustration over Stalled Putin-Zelenskyy Talks
WASHINGTON – Former U.S.โฃ President Donald Trump heldโข a virtual meeting with Ukrainian โฃPresident Volodymyr Zelenskyy and a group of European leaders on Thursday too discussโ diplomatic efforts to end the war between Russia and ukraine, revealing his increasing frustration โฃwith โthe difficulty โof arranging direct talks between Zelenskyyโข and Russianโข President Vladimir Putin.
Trump โขtold CBS News on wednesday,”I was followingโข the matter,I was seeing it,and โI talked about itโค with President Putin and President Zelenskyyโฆ but they areโค not yet โready.” He has reportedly been attempting to broker a meeting between the two leaders, but has yet to achieve any โขtangible progress.
Zelenskyy โคhas stated โฃhis willingness to meet with Putin, but the Russian side insists that the โconditions โฃand goals of any meeting must be negotiated beforehand. โคon Wednesday,Putin indicated he was prepared to meetโ Zelenskyy in Moscow,a proposal Ukrainian officials rejected dueโ to concerns for Zelenskyy’sโข safety.
The โdiscussions involving Trump followed a meeting in Paris between Zelenskyy โขandโ European leaders from a coalition of Western countries working to establishโค security guarantees for Ukraine. โUkrainian officials revealed that Zelenskyy presented a range of options, centered around a strong Ukrainian military, a European military presence within Ukraine, and a U.S.โ “support network.”โค
Kiev proposed a framework whereโ countries unable or unwilling to โdeploy large forces couldโฃ contribute thru combat aircraft, air support, intelligence sharing,โข naval deployments in the Black โขSea, small military units, orโ financial aid โฃ-โ a concept described as “forces on the ground and flags on the ground.”
According to Ukrainian officials, the discussions focused on โขcoordinating โcontributions โto security across multiple domains: land, sea, air, and cybersecurity, and aligning positionsโ on security โขguarantees.
