Daegu Landscape Sketch Exhibition: Nature & Art at Daegu Culture & Arts Center

An exhibition showcasing landscape paintings of the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions will be held at the Daegu Culture and Arts Center from March 3rd to 8th. The “Daegu Real Landscape Sketch Society Exhibition,” its second iteration since 2024, will feature works created in ink and color on Korean paper, depicting scenes encountered firsthand by the participating artists.

Seven artists will present their interpretations of the local scenery: Lim Sun-deuk, Kim Bu-kyung, Kim Young-mi, Kang Ok-nam, Jang Yu-jin, Kim Wan-hee, and Jeong Hyang-sook. The exhibition focuses on recognizable landmarks including the Geumho River, Bangcheonjeong Pavilion, Janggak Falls, Samgukjeong Pavilion, and Gosanjeong Pavilion.

According to the Daegu Real Landscape Sketch Society, the artists aim to capture more than just a visual reproduction of the landscapes. They seek to convey the “texture of air, light, and time” experienced while painting on location. The works are described as combining traditional landscape painting techniques with a modern sensibility, utilizing delicate strokes and restrained colors.

The exhibition will include both established and emerging artists who have received recognition in various art competitions, fostering a blend of generational perspectives. Exhibition materials will provide profiles of each artist and descriptions of their individual pieces to enhance visitor understanding.

A thematic arrangement of works representing the four seasons – spring, summer, fall, and winter – will allow viewers to compare and contrast the changing colors and characteristics of nature throughout the year. The use of Hanji, traditional Korean paper, is intended to enhance the three-dimensional effect of the paintings and add spatial depth to the compositions.

The Daegu Culture and Arts Center, a representative cultural space in the city, hosts a variety of performance halls, exhibition halls, and outdoor stages, and operates several museums and art communities, according to VisitKorea.

Artists involved in the exhibition stated that painting is “a process of communing with nature and reflecting oneself,” and expressed hope that visitors will find “quiet comfort through the emotions of the moment at the tip of the brush.”

An exhibition official stated that real landscape painting serves as “a record of a specific place and a work that captures the emotions of that era,” and that “archiving local natural heritage as art also has great meaning.” The Sasaenghoe, the organizing group, plans to continue holding regular exhibitions focused on local attractions and expanding citizen participation programs. Admission to the exhibition is free.
