Trump Announces 100% Tariffs on Chinese Imports,โข China Retaliates โคwith Fees on โUS Vessels
WASHINGTON – In โฃaโข sharp escalation โof trade tensions, former US President โDonald Trumpโค announced plans to impose a 100% tariff on all imports from China,โข beginning โคNovember 1, 2025. The move, detailed in a postโ on truth Social onโค Friday (November โ10, 2025), โฃis a direct response toโค China’s restrictions on exports of rare earth minerals, vital โคcomponentsโฃ forโค industries โคincluding automotive, defense, and โฃsemiconductors – of which China controls approximately 70% of the global supply.
“Based on the fact that China has taken this โunprecedented position,โ and โis speaking only on behalf of the US, and โnot other countries that are also threatened, starting โNovember 1, 2025โ (or sooner, depending on further actions or changes taken by China), the United States will impose 100% Tariffs on China, on top of any Tariffs โคthey currently pay,” Trump wrote,โ as reported โฃby CNBC.
Beyond theโข tariffs, โTrump also stated the US would implement export controls โon all software starting the same date andโ announced โคheโ would cancel โa planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit inโ Southโ Korea, citing China’s rare earth mineral policy. He further announced special fees of US$50โ per net ton for Chinese ships calling at US ports, effectiveโค October 14, 2025.
China swiftly โขresponded โwith reciprocal measures, announcing โentry fees for USโ ships. The Chinese Ministry of Transportation set a fee of 400 โyuan, equivalent โขto approximatelyโ US$56 per net ton, โfor US โคvessels. โBeijingโ characterized โฃthe โUS policy asโ a violation โof international โtrade principles and detrimental to China-US maritime trade, and plans to incrementally increase these fees through โApril 17,โ 2028.
The Chinese feesโข will apply โto ships โขowned โฃbyโ US businesses, โorganizations, individuals, and entities holding a 25% or greaterโฃ stake, and also vesselsโค flagged โคor manufactured in the United States.
Michael Hart, โฃPresident of โฃthe American Chamber of Commerce in โคChina, warned โof theโ potential economicโข consequences, stating, “In the short โterm, (imposing fees on Chinese โฃships) will result in increased costs for US consumers,โ reduced profits for shippers,โข and a slight decrease in โฃdemand for exports toโข theโ US in certain categories,” according to a โseperate CNBC report.
The escalating tensions arrive despite recent telephone conversations between Presidents Trump and Xi โคJinping, and โฃprior plans โคfor a potential in-person โคmeeting in South Korea.โฃ The future of those talks remainsโข uncertain as the tradeโ dispute โintensifies.
