Xavier Schauffele Wins Baycurrent Classic โin Japan,a Countryโ Deeplyโฃ Rooted in โขHis Family history
Yokohama,Japan -โค Xavierโค Schauffele secured victory at the Baycurrent Classic on Sunday, carding a 7-under 64 to finish with a four-round total of 19-under 265 at the Yokohama Country Club. โThe win โholds particular significance for โขSchauffele, whose mother grew up in Japan and where he has extensive family ties. Heโ finishedโ one โคstrokeโ ahead of Americanโ Max Greyserman, who was also โthe runner-up โคat the event last โyear.
Schauffele’s maternal grandparents reside in Japan, andโ his mother’s roots extendโ to Taiwan, havingโฃ spent her childhood in Japan. His wife, Maya, is half Japanese and grew up โin Okinawa, and his mother-in-law is also Japanese.
“I’ve been coming here since I was about 9 yearsโ old to visit my grandparents,” Schauffele said. “I sort of fellโค in love with this country aโ long time ago.I can’t wait to โคbring my son hereโฃ when he’s old enough to sortโ of understand โฃand appreciate the culture โคhere in Japan.” He โadded, “Yeah,โค the ties run deep for the Schauffele family here in Japan.”
Schauffele and Maya welcomed their son just over a monthโ ago. โค”It’s still โคkind of fresh, butโ it’s definitelyโ a cool thing being a dad and I’m soโ excited to go home to him โคand Maya โขafter this,”โฃ he stated.
The champion was โsupported โคduring theโ tournament โฃby family members, including hisโ 81-year-old grandmother, who walked โthe course with him.โ A family celebration is planned.”I don’t get to seeโข them very often and they’ve always been gracious with their time to come out โขwhereverโ the event was,” Schauffele said. “They’ve been awesomeโข to me and this is pretty cool. โI’ve really wanted to share a win with them, so can’t wait to get together with them.”
Max Greysermanโ finished with a 65,โ while โAmerican Michael Thorbjornsen โฃcarded a 64 to โfinish three โคstrokes โฃbehind Schauffele.
This PGA Tour title adds โto Schauffele’s impressive career, which includes two major championships – notably the 2024 british Open – and โa gold medal atโ the Tokyo Olympics (held in 2021).
Soft course conditions and calmโ winds contributed to low scoring, with American โคMatt McCarty โshooting an 11-under 60, finishing nine strokes back.japanese golfer Takumi Kanaya finished with a 9-under 62, five strokes behind the winner. McCarty narrowly missed โคa chance at a 58, finishing with a bogey onโ the โfinal hole. The โคPGA Tour โขrecord for lowestโ round remains atโค 58, โขset by Jim Furyk at the 2016 Travelersโฃ Championship.
