Kós and Douglass Shatter Records at 2025 World Aquatics Swimming World Cup
TORONTO, CANADA – November 1, 2025 – History was made at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Center today as swimmers Léon Marchand and Kate Douglass delivered record-breaking performances at the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup. Douglass became the first woman too ever swim the 100m freestyle in under 50 seconds, setting a new world record of 49.93, while Kós also achieved a historic feat.
The 2025 World Cup showcased a dominant showing from both athletes, solidifying their positions as leading figures in the sport. Douglass’s achievement marks a meaningful milestone in women’s swimming, breaking a barrier long considered unattainable.This event builds on a year of success for Douglass, who earned five Olympic medals – including two golds in the 200 breaststroke and 4×100 medley relay – at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
During the World Cup, Douglass swept the 100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, and 200 breaststroke events, earning three Triple Crowns.Her success in Toronto also secured her the overall women’s crown with 177.5 points and a total earning of $182,000. This breakdown included prize money from each of the three stops ($10,000, $12,000, and $10,000 respectively), $30,000 in Triple Crown bonuses, $20,000 for world records, and $100,000 for overall standings.
Prior to her professional career, Douglass was a key contributor to the University of Virginia’s success, helping the Cavaliers win three NCAA Division I Championships from 2019 to 2023 (2021, 2022, and 2023). She initially set the world record she lowered in Toronto earlier in Westmont.
