Venezuelan opposition Leader Calls for Global Demonstrations Following Nobel Recognition
OSLO – Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado is calling for a worldwide march this Saturday, December 6, to celebrate the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Venezuelan activists and to advocate for peace and freedom in Venezuela. The demonstrations are planned in at least 24 countries, including multiple cities across Spain like Madrid, Barcelona, Alicante, Zaragoza, and Valencia.
Machado stated, “This Saturday we have a great chance, we are going to ratify this message in the march for peace and freedom. while the regime tries to hide this unbelievable achievement, this recognition that the entire world gives to us Venezuelans, we are going to turn on a light in the main cities of the world. Every torch,every candle,every light is going to be a cry for the peace and freedom of Venezuela.” She added, “See you this coming Saturday, December 6, and that day the world will no why the Nobel Prize is ours.”
The Vente Venezuela (VV) party, led by Machado, is organizing the event. While international rallies are confirmed, VV’s communications team has indicated that plans for demonstrations within Venezuela are on hold due to safety concerns related to potential government repression.
The Nobel committee has confirmed Machado’s travel to Oslo to receive the award. Though,Jørgen Watne Frydnes,a leader of the Committee,cautioned that the trip is “dangerous” as the Maduro regime has allegedly expressed intent to prevent her return to Venezuela,emphasizing the need to ensure her safety during travel and upon her return.
Machado highlighted the international recognition as representing “the democratic struggle, citizen organization, the ability to continue standing in the face of oppression and that conviction that Venezuela was born to be free.” She urged continued advocacy, stating, “You and I know that this is a recognition that calls us to be even more firm to complete the task to achieve the freedom of Venezuela.This requires that all the time, on all possible platforms, we elevate our cause.”
