Clifton Springs Nurse Advocates forโค Healthcare Worker Safety Following Assault
Clifton Springs,โฃ N.Y. – Following an assault โat Clifton springs Hospital on August 18th, nurse โขEhrenโ Strohm is joining a growing chorus ofโฃ healthcare workersโฃ demanding increased protections against workplace violence. Strohm was allegedly kicked โin the knee by Alyna Ann Lindenau, 30, while working in the hospital’s emergency โขdepartment. The force of the kick reportedly caused a knee injury, leaving Strohm currently on crutches, outโ of โฃwork, and awaiting โขa โdiagnosis and workers’โค compensation claim.
The Ontario County Sheriff’s Officeโฃ reports Lindenau was initially arrested at a Hopewell Byrne Dairy on charges of โcriminal possession of a โcontrolled substance and later transported to โClifton Springs Hospital โขfor evaluation. She now โfaces โadditional charges of assault and aggravated harassment โคof an employee โin Erie โฃCounty, and is currently being held in the Ontario County Jail.Authoritiesโค state Lindenau has a history of โprior โinteractions wiht law enforcement.
Strohm expressed shock and โdistress over the attack,โ stating, “It’s very hard to process whyโ someone woudl purposely hurt you.”
The incident has highlighted a broader concern about escalating violence against healthcare workers. Dixie Kendall,a nurse who previously sustained โinjuries in a similar attack, emphasizedโข the prevalence of โthe issue.โ “In all โคERs โI’ve ever worked โคin, there has been this type of problem,” she โsaid, adding that the โsafety of โฃboth staff โขand patients is at risk.
Kendall and Strohm are advocating for systemic changes,โข including โrevisions to hospital policiesโค and legal frameworks. They recently contacted State Senator Pamela Helming (R-Canandaigua) to address the issue.
Senator Helming, along with other lawmakers, introduced the PROTECT Act (Pretrial โคRiskโ Overview for Threat Evaluation, Custody and Treatment) โin January. Currently in committee, the billโ aims to requireโ courts to assess a โคdefendant’s riskโ toโฃ publicโ safety and potential for reoffending.Helming stated the legislation โขis a crucial step towards ensuring safety for โallโ New Yorkers, saying, “The PROTECT Act is a commonsenseโข solutionโ that gives judges aโ critical tool to evaluate โคwhether violent offenders shoudl be held in jail before trial.”
Strohm emphasized the need for respect and safety forโค healthcare โprofessionals, stating, “It’s time to stand up and to sayโข that this isโฃ not OK, and that we will be respected and we will not get hurt.”
13WHAM Newsโ is scheduled to speak with a Rochester Regional Healthโข representative on Wednesday to discuss the โขsystem’s plansโค for protecting its staff from escalating violence.
