NBC is developing a game show based on teh popular word puzzle *Wordle*,signaling a potential expansion of the franchise beyond its digital origins. The pilot is currently filming in the United Kingdom.
The project, spearheaded by *Tonight Show* host Jimmy Fallon’s Electric Hot Dog production company, aims to capitalize on *Wordle’s* enduring appeal. Savannah Guthrie, co-host of *Today*, will host the show.The move reflects a broader trend of networks adapting accomplished digital properties for television audiences, offering a new interactive experience for fans of the daily brain teaser.
*Wordle* was created by Josh Wardle in 2021 and quickly became a global phenomenon during the pandemic.The New york Times acquired the game in January 2022 for an undisclosed seven-figure sum. In 2024 alone, the game was played 5.3 billion times, according to the publication.
The game challenges players to guess a five-letter word in six attempts, utilizing color-coded clues to refine their guesses. Jimmy Fallon previously demonstrated the game on *The Tonight Show* in January 2022 with Questlove of The Roots, offering a preview of potential television gameplay.
If greenlit, the *Wordle* game show would add to Fallon’s existing portfolio of NBC programs, including *The Tonight show*, the rebooted *Password* with Keke Palmer, *That’s My Jam*, and the competition series *On Brand*.
Savannah Guthrie has been a prominent figure at NBC for over a decade as a *Today* co-host. She has also served as the network’s chief legal analyst and made a cameo appearance on the NBC sitcom *30 Rock*.
A representative for NBC declined to comment on the status of the pilot.
