NBC is developing a game show based on teh popular โword puzzleโค *Wordle*,signaling a potential expansion of the franchise beyond its digital origins. Theโ pilot is currentlyโ filming in the United Kingdom.
The project,โ spearheaded by *Tonight Show* host Jimmy Fallon’s Electric Hot Dog production company,โฃ aims to capitalize on *Wordle’s* enduring appeal. Savannah Guthrie, co-host of *Today*, will host the show. The move reflects a broader trend of networks adapting accomplished digital properties โคfor television audiences, offering a new interactive experience for fans ofโค the daily brain teaser.
*Wordle* was created by Joshโข Wardle in 2021 and quickly becameโ a global phenomenon during the pandemic. The New york Times โacquired the game โฃin โขJanuary 2022 for an undisclosed seven-figure sum. In โ2024 alone, the game was played โข5.3 billion times,โค according to the publication.
The game challenges players toโ guess a five-letter word in six attempts, utilizing โฃcolor-coded clues to refine their guesses. Jimmy Fallon previously demonstrated the โฃgame on *The โขTonight Show* in Januaryโข 2022 with Questlove of The Roots, โoffering a preview ofโ potential television โขgameplay.
If greenlit, the *Wordle* game show would add to Fallon’s existing portfolio of NBC โขprograms, including โ*The Tonight show*, the rebooted *Password* with Keke Palmer, *That’s My Jam*, and the competition series *On Brand*.
Savannah Guthrie has been a prominent figure at NBC for over a decade as a *Today* co-host. She has also served as the network’s chief legal analyst andโข made a cameo appearance on theโ NBC sitcom โ*30 Rock*.
A representative for NBC declined to comment on the status of the pilot.
