Bangladesh Elections: UN Notes Concerns Over Violence Against Women Voters & Candidates

Dhaka – The United Nations has urged a “zero-tolerance approach” to violence against women as Bangladesh prepares to hold its 13th National Parliamentary Election on Thursday, February 12, 2026. The call comes amid growing concerns from women’s groups and civil society organizations regarding harassment and intimidation of female candidates and voters, including an increase in digital violence.

The UN statement, released Wednesday, specifically highlighted reports of cyberbullying, the creation of “deepfakes,” coordinated harassment campaigns, and the non-consensual alteration and sexualization of images using artificial intelligence. These tactics are reportedly being used against women in public life, including political leaders, activists, journalists, and human rights defenders.

“It is essential that all voters, including women, can participate as candidates and voters without intimidation, discrimination, online abuse or fear of reprisals,” the UN said. The organization emphasized that safe and meaningful participation in public life is a fundamental right, and that the safety of women candidates and voters is “essential to inclusive democratic processes.”

The UN’s call for action extends to all stakeholders, including political leaders, parties, and their supporters. It is urging them to adopt a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of violence or harassment directed at women throughout the electoral process. The United Nations has consistently advocated for women’s meaningful representation and leadership, and is currently supporting the Bangladesh Election Commission in efforts to increase women’s participation and representation in the election.

The UN statement as well acknowledged the particular vulnerabilities faced by women with disabilities, women from minority communities, and gender diverse individuals, who may encounter heightened barriers, discrimination, or gender-based violence.

Authorities have not yet publicly responded to the UN’s call for a zero-tolerance approach. The Bangladesh Election Commission is scheduled to continue preparations for the election on February 12th.
