Slippery Roads Cause Chaos: 85 Accidents Reported in Upper Lusatia adn Ore Mountains
Görlitz, Germany – Police in Görlitz are warning drivers of dangerously slippery road conditions following a surge in accidents overnight and Wednesday morning. Authorities have recorded at least 85 incidents across Upper Lusatia and the Ore Mountains since Tuesday evening, with the majority occurring by Wednesday morning.
The Görlitz police command and situation center reported over a dozen slippery accidents in Upper Lusatia alone. Officials emphasized that side roads, particularly those not yet cleared of snow and ice, pose the greatest risk.
Disruptions were also reported on the B6 (Görlitz – Bautzen) between Eiserode and the junction to Sornßig, where several trucks became stranded due to the slick conditions. Accidents along Nieskyer Straße, between Görlitz and the B6, prompted a temporary road closure.
Further north, the S95 between Leppersdorf and Radeberg was closed for four hours Wednesday morning following a serious two-vehicle collision. At approximately 7:30 a.m., one vehicle crossed into the oncoming lane, striking a guardrail.The driver sustained minor injuries. However, the driver of a second vehicle, which collided with the initial crash site, was seriously injured.Police estimate property damage to exceed 80,000 euros.
On the A4 highway, a tractor-trailer traveling towards Görlitz lost control and impacted the right guardrail between Bautzen-ost and Weißenberg. While no injuries were reported, the incident caused a temporary closure and resulted in approximately 10,000 euros in damages.
Police are urging drivers to exercise extreme caution, reduce speed, and be prepared for icy conditions, especially on untreated roadways.
