Winter Olympics: ‘Joke’ Conditions, Bobsleigh Carnage & Klæbo’s Gold Rush – Day 15 Updates

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor February 21, 2026
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Livigno, Italy – Canadian ski cross racer Reece Howden branded conditions at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics an “absolute joke” Saturday, after being eliminated in the quarterfinal stage of the men’s ski cross event. The criticism came as heavy snowfall disrupted multiple events, including a postponement of the women’s freeski halfpipe final and a series of crashes in the four-man bobsleigh heats.

Howden, the reigning World Cup Crystal Globe winner, expressed his frustration to Canadian Olympic broadcaster CBC, stating, “Honestly, the weather is ridiculous. I don’t know what the times are but it’s gotta be like 10 to 15 seconds slower. It’s a completely different course.” He added, “It’s snowing so hard and the track is dead slow. At this point, I’m happy I’m not involved in this [final] race because… Here’s not ski cross. This is terrible. Olympics is supposed to be the best of the best. The peak of our sport. I’ll wait four more years because this is an absolute joke.”

The complaints weren’t isolated to Howden. Kevin Drury, also competing for Canada, echoed the sentiment after his own quarterfinal exit. According to Olympic.ca, Drury stated, “If they wanted to put on a show, which they always say they do, this is not the show.” He added that he was “really starting to figure this course out” before the conditions deteriorated.

The challenging conditions led to a disappointing day for the entire Canadian ski cross team, with all four entries failing to advance past the quarterfinals. This marks the first time since the event’s Olympic debut in 2010 that Canada has not placed an athlete on the podium in ski cross.

The weather also impacted other events. Organizers postponed the women’s freeski halfpipe final, originally scheduled for Saturday morning, until Sunday evening, citing the inability to “prepare the pipe in a safe and fair condition.” This delay came after several events in the mountain region were already postponed earlier in the week due to inclement weather.

The Cortina Sliding Centre also saw dramatic events during the four-man bobsleigh heats. Three sleds crashed in the second round, including those piloted by Austria’s Jakob Mandlbauer, France’s Romain Heinrich, and Trinidad and Tobago’s Axel Brown. Mandlbauer was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation after his crash, with Austrian officials reporting he had movement in his extremities. The crashes resulted in the disqualification of the French and Trinidadian teams, preventing them from competing in Sunday’s event.

Elsewhere, Polish short track speed skater Kamila Sellier sustained a facial cut during a crash in the women’s 1,500-meter quarterfinal. She was treated on the ice and subsequently admitted to hospital, posting on Instagram that she was “doing quite OK” and thanking supporters.

A separate incident involved a Czechoslovakian wolfdog named Nazgul, who escaped from his home and ran onto the cross-country course during a biathlon event, briefly joining the skiers on the finishing straight. While the incident caused a “panic moment” for the dog’s owners, it was largely met with amusement.

Kamila Sellier Injury: Speedskater Remains Positive After Olympic Face Skate Accident

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor February 21, 2026
written by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Polish speedskater Kamila Sellier underwent surgery and is recovering after a skate blade struck her face during a women’s 1500-meter quarterfinal at the 2026 Winter Olympics on Friday, February 20th. Sellier, 25, posted an update to Instagram on Saturday morning stating she was “doing quite okay” and shared a photo from her hospital bed, expressing optimism about her recovery.

The incident occurred during a tangle with Italy’s Ariana Fontana, when American skater Kristen Santos-Griswold’s skate made contact with Sellier’s face as she fell to the ice. Santos-Griswold was penalized for an illegal lane pass during the sequence, according to reports.

Sellier immediately began bleeding and medical personnel attended to her on the ice, covering her with a large white sheet whereas she received initial treatment. She was then stretchered off the ice, acknowledging the crowd with a thumbs-up gesture. She received stitches at the Milano Ice Skating Arena before being transported to the hospital.

A CT scan revealed a minor fracture, according to Polsat Sports. Konrad Niedźwiedzki, the sports director of the Polish Speed Skating Association, stated Friday that the accident potentially injured Sellier’s zygomatic bone, or cheekbone. He also reported that she was conscious following the incident but had sustained a cut cheek requiring stitches, along with swelling.

Niedźwiedzki further detailed that surgery was performed to “repair the damaged bone” and that Sellier woke up with significant swelling, according to EuroSport via the Daily Mail. He indicated that further eye movement tests were scheduled to assess any potential damage.

A Team Poland official confirmed to the BBC that Sellier had surgery Friday night and was in good condition, with additional tests planned to evaluate her eye. Sellier’s injury prevented her from advancing in the competition, while Santos-Griswold’s penalty also resulted in her elimination. Fontana finished fifth in the race.

“i know that one day i’ll look at this picture and remember that i’m stronger than i ever believed,” Sellier wrote in her Instagram post. “thank you for all your words of support, just wanted to let you know that i’m doing quite okay 🫣 #thankyou.”

Winter Olympics 2022: Injury & Trump Visit After USA Win – LIVE Updates

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor February 21, 2026
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Livigno, Italy – Team USA freeskier Hunter Hess responded to criticism from former President Donald Trump following his qualifying run at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Livigno on Friday. After successfully completing his run, Hess formed an “L” shape with his hand and placed it on his forehead, a gesture he later explained was directed at Trump.

The exchange began after Hess, during a pre-Olympics press conference, stated that representing the U.S. “brings up mixed emotions” given the current political climate and heightened immigration enforcement actions. He clarified that his representation was for “my friends and my family and the people that supported me getting here,” and contingent on alignment with his “moral values.”

Trump responded on his social media platform, calling Hess “a real Loser” and questioning whether he should even be on the team. “Extremely hard to root for someone like this,” Trump wrote, according to reports from CBS News and USA Today.

Hess acknowledged Trump’s comments after his qualifying run, stating, “Apparently I’m a loser.” He subsequently qualified for the 12-man final, finishing tenth overall with a best score of 58.75 in his third run. He had previously achieved a score of 85.00 in his second qualifying run, a 2.25-point improvement from his first.

Despite the controversy, Hess emphasized his dedication to the sport and his country. “I worked so hard to be here. I sacrificed my entire life to create this happen,” he said. “I’m not going to let controversy like that get in my way. I love the United States of America. Say that enough. My original statement, I felt like I said that, but apparently, people didn’t take it that way.”

The incident highlights a broader trend of political tension intersecting with the Olympic Games. As reported by POLITICO, Trump’s presence, or lack thereof, is being felt throughout the competition, even though he is not attending the opening ceremony. The White House has not commented on Trump’s social media post regarding Hess.
