Alligator Encounter in Naples Florida Backyard | February 2026

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor February 22, 2026
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

A Naples, Florida, resident received an unexpected visitor in their backyard on February 20, 2026, when an alligator was discovered near the waterfront property. The incident, documented in a social media post by Naples.florida.life, prompted a response from local wildlife authorities.

Even as details surrounding the specific removal of the alligator have not been released, the event underscores the frequent encounters between humans and alligators in Southwest Florida. According to a recent report from the Naples Daily News, winter months represent a particularly active period for alligator sightings, as cooler temperatures drive the reptiles to seek out sunbathing opportunities in shrinking freshwater sources.

Experts emphasize the importance of caution around alligators. The Naples Alligator Guide, published by Naples Florida Travel Guide, details safety tips for residents, and visitors. Alligators are commonly found in both fresh and brackish water environments, including rivers, canals, ponds, and lakes throughout the region.

Local authorities recommend maintaining a safe distance from alligators and never attempting to feed them. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) provides resources on alligator safety and responsible coexistence.

Several locations in and around Naples offer opportunities to observe alligators in their natural habitat. Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, managed by the Audubon Society, is a well-known destination for wildlife viewing, encompassing over 13,000 acres of wetlands, pine, and cypress forests, according to Naples.Travel. Other potential viewing spots include Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve, Babcock Eco Adventures, and Fisheating Creek, as identified by the Naples Daily News.

Naples Zoo & Caribbean Gardens too houses ten alligators in its Alligator Bay exhibit. The American alligator is the official state reptile of Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi, with males averaging 10-12 feet in length and females typically reaching 6-8 feet.

The FWC has not yet released information regarding any increased alligator activity or specific response protocols following the February 20th incident.
