The first ten minutes of the new Quickline Handball League season belonged to the guests from Bern. After Marvin Lier took the lead, the cadets made a few mistakes. The guests took full advantage of this and went 5:1 ahead in the 9th minute. Supported by a small but loud group of fans, the Bernese showed that they were willing to challenge the reigning Swiss champions. The cadets had to survive seven goalless minutes before it was Lier who again brought the necessary momentum to the Oranges’ game with two goals for his team. Now all the players were definitely shaken up. A brilliant save by Best Player Julien Meyer and goals by Odinn Thor Rikhardsson and returning player Lucas Meister brought the equalizer for the home team. Just one minute later, Patrik Martinovic put the cadets back in the lead. The initial nervousness was gone and the cadets did not let the lead slip away. Within four minutes of play, they had managed to turn the game in their favor. By halftime, the cadets had increased their lead to 16:13.
After the break, Mehdi Ben Romdhane increased the lead to plus four and a brilliant Meyer in goal for the cadets drove the opposition to despair with a double save. The cadets’ improved defensive performance enabled the attackers to score easy goals again and again. New signing Kassem Awad analysed the game after the end of the game: “We played well in defence from the end of the first half and were able to score a few goals. This made the game a little easier for us.” Awad himself contributed five goals from as many attempts to the victory. The two wingers Rikhardsson with six and Lier with seven were even more accurate. After a long injury break, Donat Bartok also impressed with four impressive goals. Coach Hrvoje Horvat was also happy with his team’s performance: “I am satisfied with the two wins against Kriens in the Supercup and against Bern. The boys are doing their best after the tough preparation and the most important thing is that nobody is injured. Our goal is to improve from game to game.”
The next opportunity for the cadets is next Wednesday, September 4th, when they will play away against Pfadi Winterthur. The next home game will be on Wednesday, September 11th, against HC Kriens-Luzern. Kick-off is at 6:45 p.m.

Fawn rescue with drones: Season 2024 – Difficult weather conditions
There are several reasons for the decline in fawn rescues:
- In the first half of April, farmers benefited from a sunny, warm period. Many meadows could already be mown. The fawns had not yet been born at this time, so the mowing could be carried out without any danger.
- This was followed by a long period in which, in many places, several sunny, hot days rarely followed one another. This made it difficult for agriculture to find an optimal time to mow. Some meadow areas were still not mown by the end of the fawn season. This is also reflected in a decrease in the number of hectares of meadowland flown over compared to 2023.
- Due to the rainy weather, the roe deer often gave birth to their fawns in the forest rather than in the wet meadowland.
Every spring, numerous roe deer bring their fawns into the tall grass, where they hide. In the first few weeks of their lives, fawns have a ducking instinct that protects them from their natural enemies. However, this instinct also poses a deadly danger for fawns: farmers have to mow their meadows. It often happens that an undiscovered fawn falls victim to a mowing machine. Official statistics show an average of around 1,500 fawns killed by agricultural machinery over the years. However, according to experts, the number of unreported cases is much higher. In Switzerland, it is estimated that several thousand animals are killed each year. The non-profit organization Rehkitzrettung Schweiz has made fawn rescue its mission. Its goal is to save as many fawns as possible. The volunteer pilots use their drones and thermal imaging cameras to find fawns efficiently. They work closely with hunters and farmers to do this. In order to be able to provide the services of Rehkitzrettung Schweiz even more comprehensively in the future, new rescue teams are trained every year. From August 2024, information events will therefore be held again throughout Switzerland.
Swiss voters approve 13th AHV with historic majority in canton of Jura
8.2% of voters and 15 cantons said YES to a 13th AHV, only 8 cantons were against it. This means that the popular initiative of the trade unions, the Left and the Greens was accepted, which was considered rather unlikely at the beginning of the voting campaign.
Approval was greatest in the canton of Jura, where over 82% said YES. In the canton of St.Gallen only 48.7% were in favor of the 13th pension, i.e. the majority were against it.
The “Neue Zürcher Zeitung – NZZ” calls the result historic and writes: “For the first time in Swiss history, the unions have succeeded in helping an initiative to expand the welfare state achieve a breakthrough.”
The Tagesanzeiger notes that the verdict is a “sensation” and predicts: “The mood in the country has changed. The unions’ great success sets a signal for the rest of the elections this year.”
Blick reports on tears of emotion and that the pension will be paid out for the first time in 2026.
However, all commentators are wondering how this increase will be paid for.

Arnegg Bicycle Traffic Improvement Project Approved by City Parliament 2025 Construction Loan for Bike Path Connection in Arnegg Unanimously Approved
In Arnegg, there is no appropriate crossing point for bicycle traffic at the confluence of Geretschwilerstrasse and Bischofszellerstrasse. In the future, the cycle path connection from Arnegg to Gossau will lead via Bettenstrasse and Loobachweg to Geretschwilerstrasse. In order for the Loobachweg to meet the requirements of a pedestrian and cycle path with two directions of traffic, it should be widened to 4.5 meters. The city parliament unanimously approved the construction loan of 345,900 francs. This means that the project can be implemented in 2025 before the right to purchase the required land expires. The federal and cantonal governments have pledged contributions to the expansion; The city is left with remaining costs of almost 79,000 francs.
