Magdeburg, Germany – SC Magdeburg demonstrated its dominance in the Daikin Handball-Bundesliga Wednesday evening, defeating TBV Lemgo Lippe 36-32 in a high-stakes match at the sold-out GETEC Arena. The victory strengthens Magdeburg’s position at the top of the league standings and signals a potent return from the Bundesliga’s pause for the European Handball Championship.
Prior to the match, Lemgo coach Florian Kehrmann lauded Magdeburg’s squad, stating, “Bennet Wiegert has a clear idea of the game and has brought together perhaps the best players in the world for this idea. We see by far the best squad in the league.” Kehrmann’s assessment came before the honoring of Magdeburg players Matej Mandic (Croatia), Lukas Mertens (Germany), and Magnus Saugstrup (Denmark), all medalists at the recent European Championship, a ceremony met with enthusiastic applause from the home crowd.
Magdeburg quickly established control, responding to a recent 26-33 defeat against SG Flensburg-Handewitt with a commanding performance. Omar Ingi Magnusson scored the first two goals for Magdeburg, marking a strong start after what was described as a disappointing European Championship for the player. The intensity of the match was evident early on, with Magdeburg coach Bennet Wiegert receiving a yellow card in the eighth minute following protests to officials.
SC Magdeburg goalkeeper Sergey Hernandez played a crucial role in the first half, recording five saves, including several key stops, by the twelfth minute. The team extended its lead to 8-4, signaling a clear absence of any lingering effects from the European Championship tournament. Magdeburg entered halftime with a substantial 19-13 advantage.
Lemgo mounted a stronger challenge after the break, but were unable to reduce the deficit to fewer than three goals. Gisli Kristjansson, Felix Claar, and Magnus Saugstrup led the Magdeburg attack, converting opportunities with precision. With ten minutes remaining, Magdeburg held a comfortable 30-26 lead.
Lukas Mertens did not see playing time, being rested by the coaching staff. Magdeburg ultimately managed the game effectively, securing a 36-32 victory.
Following the match, Magdeburg’s Gisli Kristjansson, speaking to Dyn, acknowledged the challenge ahead, stating, “Playing away in Kiel is always a thrilling task. You need 60 good minutes, but the goal is to win.”
Despite the loss, Lemgo coach Florian Kehrmann expressed a degree of satisfaction, telling Dyn, “Magdeburg got a little tired towards the end because Benno hardly made any changes. That’s also an appreciation for us, that they played against us with their best defensive players.”
Magdeburg will next face THW Kiel on Sunday at 18:00.
