Olivia Rodrigo Condemns ICE After Agency Uses Her Song in Recruitment Video
Pop star Olivia Rodrigo has publicly denounced U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after the agency used her song ”get him back!” in a recruitment video posted to social media. Rodrigo accused ICE of utilizing her music to promote “racist, hateful propaganda,” and a message from the artist expressing this sentiment has been widely circulated by fans online.
The controversy underscores Rodrigo’s established stance against the Trump administration’s immigration policies and ICE’s enforcement practices. The incident highlights a growing tension between artists and government agencies over the use of creative work for political messaging, particularly when that messaging clashes with the artist’s values. It also raises questions about the appropriateness of using popular music to attract recruits for an agency facing ongoing criticism for its handling of immigration issues.
According to Rolling Stone, Rodrigo initially expressed her disapproval in a now-deleted comment, stating, “Don’t ever use my songs to promote your racist, hateful propaganda.” Fans quickly responded by reposting her message across various platforms.
In a statement to Rolling Stone, a DHS spokesperson defended the agency’s use of the song, stating, “America is grateful all the time for our federal law enforcement officers who keep us safe. We suggest Ms. Rodrigo thank them for their service, not belittle their sacrifice.”
Rodrigo has previously voiced strong opposition to ICE’s actions. In June, she shared an Instagram story condemning mass deportations in Los Angeles, stating, “I’ve lived in L.A. my whole life and I’m deeply upset about thes violent deportations of my neighbors under the current administration… Treating hardworking community members with such little respect, empathy, and due process is awful.” She further affirmed her support for the Los Angeles immigrant community and the right to protest.
A representative for Rodrigo has not yet provided further comment on the matter.
