South Korean Envoy Reportsโฃ Positive Signals from China Despite Noโ Meetingโข withโข Xi Jinping
BEIJING -โฃ A South Koreanโ delegationโ led by Special Envoy Park Cheol-min concluded a visit to โขChina โon Tuesday, reporting constructive discussions with high-ranking โขChinese officials despite not โขsecuringโ a meeting with President Xi Jinping. The visit, beginningโ on โtheโข 24th, focused on bolstering bilateralโฃ relations adn addressing sensitiveโ ancient and economicโ issues.
During the trip, Park met with Zhao Leji, Chairman of the โคNational People’s Congress – โขthe highest-ranking officialโ he engaged with during โthe visit – placing him โthird in China’s power structure after Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang. He also met with aโ deputy vice president of the People’s Congress.
According to reports,โข Xi Jinping previously met with envoys dispatched by former South Korean Presidents Park Geun-hye andโข Moon Jae-in, making thisโ omission โขaโค notableโ point. โHowever, Park conveyed that Chinese officials emphasized the mutual benefits of aโค strong โrelationship.โฃ “xi Jinping emphasized that both sides would benefit if โขthey were friendly, and theyโข would lose all โif they were not,” Park relayed. Chineseโ officials expressedโ a desire to “join hands with Korea and โpromote theโ relationship betweenโ the two countries.”
The delegation secured consensus on several key areas. โคPark stated that โขbothโ Xi Jinping and President Yoon Suk Yeolโ have agreedโ on deepening the strategic cooperation partnership between Korea and China, and now the focus is on “specifying them and maturing” that partnership. Discussions also โคhighlighted the importance of โprivate exchanges, friendships, and economic and cultural cooperation, with a call for China to collaborate “for peace and stability in the region.”
A critically important outcome โฃofโฃ the visit was progress on threeโค keyโ issues: a joint research โขinitiative with Seoul national Universityโ and Beijing University to address anti-Korean sentiment and historical grievances; cooperation โฃwith the Dalian Danggu district to locate the remains of โAhn jung-geun, a Korean independence activist assassinated in 1909; and a consensus to move forward with the second phase of the Korea-China Free Tradeโฃ Agreement (FTA).Park also โindicated significant progress in cooperation regarding core minerals, specificallyโค rare โขearths, but refrained โfrom providing specific details โ”in consideration of equity with other countries.”
One โChinese official, a deputy leader โขwho spent 40 years working in Shanghai, was noted for his significant contributions to Korean-Chinese exchange and cooperation.Another official emphasized China’s desire for “continuous, healthy,โ and stable growth โof bilateral relations” to benefit both nations and contribute to regional peace and prosperity.Whenโ questioned about the lack of a meetingโ with Presidentโข Xi, Park stated that China “only explained the โคreason for a certain reason,” suggesting the โdecision was basedโ on โinternal chinese considerations.
