DENTON COUNTY REPORTS FIRST WEST NILE VIRUS CASE OF 2025
Denton County Public โขHealthโข (DCPH) confirmed the first human case of West Nile โคvirus (WNV) in theโข county for 2025 on May 15, 2025. The case โขinvolves a resident of Denton County.
West Nile virus is a mosquito-borne disease transmitted through the bite of anโ infected mosquito. While most infections are asymptomatic, approximately 20% of infected individuals develop West โฃNileโฃ fever, characterized by โsymptoms likeโ fever,โฃ headache, body aches,โค nausea, โขvomiting, and fatigue. Less then 1% โขdevelop serious neurological illness, such โas encephalitis or meningitis. Denton Countyโ has seen increasing โWNV activity in mosquito traps, prompting DCPH to issueโ a public health alert.”we are urgingโข residents โคto take precautions against mosquito bites,” said Dr. Anita Kurian, Denton โCountyโข Local Health Authority and Director of DCPH. “The bestโ way to protectโ yourselfโ is to eliminateโค standing water around your homes and use insect repellent containing DEET, โpicaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.”
DCPH โrecommends the following preventative measures:
Drain: Emptyโค standing water โfrom containers โlike flowerpots, gutters, birdbaths,โฃ and tires.
Defend: Use insect repellent containing โฃDEET, โคpicaridin, or oil of lemonโค eucalyptus.
Dress: Wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors.
Time: Limit outdoor โคactivityโ during peak mosquito hours (dusk and dawn).
