Portuguese Doctor Arrested in €3 Million Fraud‍ Scheme Involving Weight-Loss Drug Prescriptions

Lisbon, Portugal – November 19, 2025 – A Portuguese endocrinologist has been arrested on suspicion of fraudulently prescribing anti-diabetic drugs, including Ozempic, Victoza, and Trulicity, to individuals without diabetes for weight loss purposes, resulting in an estimated €3 million loss to the Portuguese ‌state.

Dr. Graça Vargas, identified as the main suspect, allegedly prescribed over 65,000 packages ⁢of the medications to 1,914 ⁣people, ⁤making her the country’s top prescriber of these drugs, ‍according to CNN Portugal.⁤ The arrest is part of “Operation obélix,” launched ⁢by the Portuguese Judicial Police (PJ).

Authorities allege ⁢the scheme involved falsifying patient data within prescription software to obtain reimbursement from Portugal’s National Health Service (SNS). The SNS covers up to 95% of the medication’s cost for patients with type 2 diabetes. By falsely claiming diabetic status ⁣for non-diabetic patients, the suspects fraudulently obtained co-payment fees.

The PJ statement ⁣indicates the crimes involve qualified fraud and computer ⁣fraud, with evidence suggesting the involvement ⁤of two doctors, a lawyer, and a medical clinic believed to be operating as fronts.

INFARMED, the Portuguese government’s health products watchdog, notes that these⁤ medications are authorized for⁤ patients with⁣ “insufficiently controlled” type 2 diabetes and have faced availability issues since 2022 due to increased demand, including off-label use for⁤ weight loss and obesity treatment.

Alongside dr.Vargas’s arrest, police executed‍ search warrants at homes, a lawyer’s office, accountancy firms, two companies, and a health clinic. Dr. ‌Vargas is currently ⁣awaiting questioning in court. The ⁤PJ‌ has not yet released further details⁢ regarding the ongoing investigation.

Eating this before breakfast and lunch can mimic Ozempic

by David Harrison – Chief Editor November 14, 2025
written by David Harrison – Chief Editor

Whey Protein May Offer ozempic-Like Benefits, New Research Suggests

NEW YORK – Consuming whey protein before meals could offer a natural way to⁤ regulate blood ⁤sugar adn promote fullness, potentially mimicking the effects of popular GLP-1⁤ drugs like Ozempic, according to recent studies. The findings ⁤offer a potential choice for ⁣individuals seeking to manage weight and blood sugar levels without the side‌ effects associated with medication.

A byproduct of cheese production, whey ⁤protein is already‍ a⁢ staple for those looking to build muscle and increase strength. However, emerging research indicates its benefits extend beyond fitness, impacting gut hormones and appetite regulation. ⁤Studies demonstrate whey protein‍ stimulates the release of GLP-1, a gut hormone that reduces calorie intake by promoting feelings of fullness and suppressing appetite – ‌the same mechanism employed ⁣by GLP-1 ⁤drugs like Ozempic.

While Ozempic and similar medications ‌have proven effective in regulating‌ blood sugar and triggering weight loss, ‌thay can come with ⁢unpleasant side ⁢effects, including sulfur burps and, in some ⁣cases, facial sagging dubbed ⁤”Ozempic face.” Whey protein, ‌conversely, offers a⁣ potentially gentler approach, though it can cause digestive issues like bloating or‌ cramps in some individuals, and may trigger allergic⁢ reactions in ‌those with milk allergies.

Researchers have identified several forms of whey protein – concentrate, isolate, and hydrolysate – each differing in processing, protein purity, and⁤ absorption rate. Whey protein hydrolysate is pre-digested for rapid absorption, isolate boasts a high protein concentration, and concentrate is the least processed form. The optimal choice⁤ depends on individual ‌health goals. A 2020 study published in PubMed further supports‍ whey protein’s benefits, while a 2016 study also available on PubMed highlights its impact on⁢ satiety.

Title: Eli Lilly’s New Weight Loss Pill & Personalized Approaches

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor November 7, 2025

The Evolving Landscape of Weight Management: Beyond the Pill

Table of Contents

  • The Evolving Landscape of Weight Management: Beyond the Pill
    • AI-Powered Individualized Nutrition
    • Re-evaluating Intermittent fasting
    • Obesity: A Disease,Not a Flaw

The fight against ‌obesity is undergoing a significant transformation, moving ⁤beyond simple dietary restrictions and embracing a multifaceted approach. While medication, ⁣including increasingly potent options like retatruide (demonstrating over 24% weight loss in studies), ‍is gaining prominence,⁤ it’s not the sole innovation. these medications, however, often come with side effects, such as gastrointestinal issues, and require ongoing medical supervision.

A parallel and increasingly vital strategy is personalized nutrition. The‌ era of “one-size-fits-all” diets ⁤is waning. Instead, cutting-edge technologies – DNA tests, wearable sensors, and AI-powered applications – are being⁢ utilized to analyze individual metabolism, genetic predispositions, and gut bacteria composition. This data is⁣ then leveraged to create tailor-made nutritional plans designed for optimal results.

AI-Powered Individualized Nutrition

The field of nutrigenomics, while still‍ in its nascent stages, holds the promise of even more⁢ precise dietary recommendations than traditional calorie ⁣counting. The ultimate goal is to develop eating plans that are perfectly aligned with an ⁤individual’s unique biological makeup, fostering long-term health and well-being.

Complementing this development are Digital Health Applications (DiGAs). In Germany, these “apps on prescription” are becoming increasingly common, with health insurance companies covering their costs.Companies like Oviva combine digital food diaries with personalized guidance from qualified nutrition ‍experts. ‍

These apps ⁤offer ⁤a complete approach, integrating features such as:

* ‌Exercise programs
* ‍ ‌Stress management⁤ techniques
*⁢ Sleep optimization strategies
* Direct communication with⁢ healthcare consultants

Re-evaluating Intermittent fasting

Established methods like intermittent fasting are also being re-examined.‍ Recent‍ research urges caution. A 2025 study conducted in Munich on mice raised concerns that long-term intermittent ⁢fasting could potentially hinder the development of insulin-producing‍ cells in⁤ young ‍individuals.

Further, a November study by the German Institute for⁢ Nutritional Research indicated that⁤ intermittent fasting, without concurrent calorie⁣ restriction, doesn’t yield significant metabolic benefits. The 16:8 method appears to primarily shift the body’s internal clock, with limited impact⁣ beyond that.

Obesity: A Disease,Not a Flaw

A fundamental shift in perspective is occurring. Obesity‍ is increasingly recognized not as a personal failing, but as‍ a complex, chronic disease. The⁤ anticipated availability of medications in pill form by 2026 is expected to further reduce the stigma associated with weight management.

However, medication is moast effective when integrated into⁢ a holistic plan ‌encompassing‌ exercise ‍and behavioral changes. Digital tools are proving invaluable in bridging the ‌gap between medical advice and real-world implementation.

Long-term studies are crucial⁢ to fully assess the safety and ‍efficacy of these new active ‍ingredients and personalized approaches,⁣ independent of industry influence. The future of weight management ‌is undeniably digital, personalized, and supported by pharmaceutical advancements.

Understand Your Body’s ⁤Signals: ⁣Maintaining long-term ⁣health requires understanding your key laboratory values, notably those related to metabolism and‌ insulin.
