A Corsican Theatre Troupe’s Unexpectedโ Beginnings
Calvi,Corsica – On Saturday,October โ14,2000,at 6 p.m., a small group of theatre enthusiasts โgathered under the Saint-Antoine Oratory in Calviโ forโ theirโข inaugural session. The space was sparse, furnished with little more thanโฃ well-worn chairs, and lead by a director who embraced a dramatically โขfitting name: Orlando Furioso.
From thisโค humbleโ beginning, “Ce Soo-lร truop” – a troupe embodying the unique artistic and social spirit of Balagne – was born. The group’s origins are deeply rooted in aโ passion rekindled in Calenzana duringโ theโ late 1990s, reviving a local theatrical tradition that had faded โคsince 1914.
Orlando, a frequent travelerโฃ to Corsica via ferry, fondly recalls the “embryo” of the โคtroupe. โฃ “From ther was โคborn โคtheโ desire for a permanent โฃworkshop,” statesโข Franรงois Canava. โค The process, involving โDominique Bianconi โขand Pierre, encompassed what some describe as “Gubboria Dervule Derrecave” – aโค conventional Corsican method.
The troupe’s formation wasn’t entirely planned. A chance encounter playedโ a pivotal role in bringing Orlando to Corsica. Tonรฌ Casalonga recounts โmeeting Orlando in Vienna, โคwhereโค he was performing. โ “I met Orlando in Vienna, where he wasโข appearing in a production. Atโ the end โขof the show, he asks us where we come from. ‘Of Corsica,’ weโ answer. He says he doesn’t knowโฆ”
As Ce Soo-lร truop celebrates 25 years of creation, its story serves as a testament โto the power of passion, โคchance encounters, and the enduring appeal of โlocal traditions.
