Huge Sinkhole Appears in Eindhoven’s Kalverstraat – Is the City Under Attack?

How many more sinkholes can the city of Eindhoven handle? Now a large gaping hole has spontaneously fallen in the Kalverstraat. Or does the Eindhoven city council, led by Mayor Dijsselbloem, secretly have plans for an underground?

A hole appeared in the middle of a carriageway in Kalverstraat on Monday. From a distance it looks like a puzzle piece. According to a 112 correspondent, the sinkhole is two meters deep. “And it seems as if the hole continues meters under the road surface. All the sand underneath has been washed away,” he told Omroep Brabant.

Kalverstraat has been cordoned off. There is one lane left for traffic. It is not yet known when the hole will be closed.

Drench
There have been about ten large holes or subsidence in Eindhoven recently. These are probably the result of the recent soaking wet period.

Jordy Capello’s Family Left in the Cold after House Fire: Enexis Fails to Restore Electricity (Photos)

Suddenly it is cold in our country and that is exactly what Jordy Capello, his parents and sister from St Willebrord do not want. The family has been literally and figuratively left in the cold since a house fire at the end of November last year. “My mother regularly calls Enexis, but I no longer have confidence in them.”

The trouble started on November 22 with the smart electricity meter. It caught fire for unknown reasons and a short time later the Capello family house on Kaaistraat was ablaze. “The fire spread quickly,” says 17-year-old Jordy.

“The entire hallway was affected and then the second floor.”

The entire corridor was heavily affected by fire and smoke. The smoke also found its way to the second floor. “And we haven’t even mentioned water damage yet. And the stench that still lingers in the building. If we want to clean something, we really have to wear face masks,” says Jordy.

“We would like to clean and repair everything, but you also need electricity for that. A replacement meter box that we have installed may only be connected by certified people or organizations. This means that we cannot drill or saw,” Jordy explains. Calling Enexis seems like a logical step. But in practice this turns out to be disappointing, because according to Jordy the network manager hardly cares.

“We are constantly being sent from pillar to post.”

“We really call Enexis every three days. We keep hoping to finally hear a date when they can come, but we are constantly sent from pillar to post. We keep hearing that things are being rushed, but we don’t believe it anymore. I don’t like being confronted with this ruin every day.”

Meanwhile, the Capello family is almost two months further along. The family camps in a caravan next to the house. It can be cozy with the four of us on the couch and some chairs around a heater, but fun is different. Especially now that it is getting colder every day and especially the perceived temperature is dropping like a stone.

Fortunately, they can occasionally visit the neighbors. Jordy: “We are allowed to draw some power there every now and then, but we don’t want to do that too often to prevent the fuses from blowing. If we turn on the TV, vacuum cleaner or microwave, we run the risk of the power going out and then we have to hope that the neighbors are home to turn it back on.”

“It’s more survival than living.”

Jordy: “It’s more about surviving than living. You’re just trying to see how we keep each other warm.” During the day they sit in the living area of the caravan with double clothing and gloves on. In the evening they put about three hot water bottles in bed. With the freezing weather coming, Jordy has a clear wish. “Enexis, put power back on for us.” .This is no longer possible.”

Get Ready to Skate: Cold Weather and Ice Rinks Expected Next Week, Says Weatherman

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com January 3, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The weather will change significantly in the coming days: it will stop raining (!) and it will be cold. Next week you can skate on flooded meadows and other natural ice rinks.

Weatherman Wouter van Bernebeek from Weerplaza can be brief about it as Koen Wijn from the morning program Wakker! asks if we can skate next week: “I think so.”

According to Van Bernebeek, it will still be very wet and mild on Wednesday at 12 degrees. “But that is going to change. Thursday and Friday are transition days, but from the weekend onwards it will be dry and a lot colder. The wind then turns to the northeast and there is quite a bit of cold there.”

Next week it will be quite freezing at night. “At night it can be -5, -6 or -7 and during the day it also remains below zero. And then you can quickly skate on all those flooded meadows and ice rinks.”

Farmer struggles to harvest sugar beets in flooded fields due to heavy rain

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com December 27, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The fields of farmer Willem de Bruin in Milheeze have turned into a large mud puddle. Due to the enormous rainfall in recent weeks, it is hardly possible to harvest the sugar beets from the land. That is why farmer Willem is now working with a tracked vehicle in an attempt to harvest his beets.

A large mud puddle with water puddles. This is what Willem de Bruin’s fields look like after weeks of rain. The young arable farmer has never seen it so wet before: “I hear it was that bad in 1998, but that was before my time.”

Because it was much too wet, he waited three weeks before harvesting the beets. But it didn’t get any drier, and the harvesting couldn’t wait any longer. “Normally we are ready before Christmas, but now we are here with all the boys harvesting during the holidays. And I think we will still be busy throughout January.”

Sturdy price tag
That is why a tracked vehicle now drives over the soaking wet fields that, just like a tank, has no difficulty moving through the mud puddle. The beets are tipped into a loading container on top of the tracked vehicle. Willem is happy that the beets are finally coming from the field, but it comes with a hefty price tag: not only does the tracked vehicle have to be rented, but additional people are also working. Harvesting is usually done with two people, but now five are needed. And it takes a lot longer: “Normally we harvest one hectare per hour. Now I’m happy if half a hectare is achieved in that time.”

The sugar beets are harvested

Fortunately, the arable farmer has no complaints about the quality of the beets. Despite all the wetness, it is just good. And thanks to the use of heavy equipment, he estimates that 95 percent of the beets are still harvested. They go to Dinteloord, to the sugar factory.

To reap late is to sow late
Farmer Willem expects that the problems will return again next year. Because of the bad weather and the late harvest now, sowing will only be late next spring. “The soil must first recover, settle down and dry out again.” Only then can he sow again. And even if he wanted to, the beets don’t grow faster. “They just need their time. Nature cannot be forced.”

Those are problems for next year. After the sugar beets, farmer Willem first has potatoes to get out of the ground. “That works in the same way as here: we need many more people and machines for that.” Unlike sugar beets, potatoes do suffer from the bad weather. But Willem seems to have already resigned himself to that. “We will first wait for a better moment. And then see what we can still harvest.”

New Residential Area in Eindhoven Faces Christmas Flooding Crisis

New Residential Area in Eindhoven Faces Christmas Flooding Crisis

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com December 24, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

A complete new residential area on the Langlaar in Eindhoven is in danger of having a wet start to Christmas because the water cannot drain. The enormous rainfall of the last few days should sink into an underground drainage system, but the ground is completely saturated.

The water is already in the crawl spaces of the rental houses. The downspouts of the houses are not connected to the sewer, but end just above the ground on a grid. The water should slowly sink into the ground through that grid, but that is no longer possible due to the heavy rain that has fallen in recent days.

The fire brigade tries to prevent the water from flowing into the houses with a pump. “In some houses it is only a few centimeters before it flows from the crawl space into the homes,” says a 112 correspondent.

The crawl spaces of the houses are connected to each other, which means that the fire brigade needs heavier guns, the 112 correspondent sees. Population Care of the municipality of Eindhoven has been called on to help think about a solution.

It keeps raining
For the time being, it does not appear that the situation in the new housing estate is improving. It will rain for a long time at times in the coming days, Weerplaza said. Only on Tuesday will it be dry for almost the entire day for the first time since.

New residential area
The houses on the Langlaar are part of the large new construction project ‘Buurtschap te Veld’, where 670 houses will ultimately be built. The district is located in the north of Eindhoven, near the A50.

The Science Behind the Stunning Purple Sky Explained by Weatherman Donny de Koning

The Science Behind the Stunning Purple Sky Explained by Weatherman Donny de Koning

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com December 22, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Anyone who looked outside shortly before nightfall probably noticed: the sky turned completely purple. A beautiful spectacle that was captured in photos by several people. Weatherman Donny de Koning explains how this is possible.

The explanation is simple, says the weatherman. “We saw the sun setting on the horizon. So it illuminated the clouds. It gives a beautiful image.”

De Koning emphasizes that it is not about the rare mother-of-pearl clouds, which can sometimes be seen at this time of year. “They occur at very high altitudes at temperatures of at least -80 degrees. For these stratospheric clouds to form, the air must be extremely cold at about 25 kilometers. This does not happen so quickly above the Netherlands,” the weatherman explains.

On Friday evening there was ‘just’ a beautiful purple sky above our province. To see pearly clouds, you need to be more lucky. “The conditions are right. They may be visible in the coming days.”

Below you can see some of the beautiful pictures.
