Slovakian Ice Hockey Team Eyes Medal at Under-20 World Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden

Shortly before the start of the Under-20 World Hockey Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden, there were also experts who predicted medal success for the ambitious Slovakian team. During the most recent – bronze intervention of the Slovak hockey players at the MSJ eight years ago, there were also two players who are currently wearing the jersey of the SHL leader Vlci Žilina. They are defender Matúš Holenda and forward Patrik Koyš. And both of them would not be opposed if something similar to what happened in Canada was repeated now in the north of Europe.

It is here! Slovak ice hockey players start their journey to the World Cup under 20 years. At the start, they will face a challenging opponent, in the federal derby they will face the Czech Republic. The opening ceremony is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. Watch the ONLINE broadcast of the match with audio commentary on ŠPORT.sk!

“I think we have smart hockey players. And although we are missing the two biggest names (Slafkovský and Nemec – note SITA), there is enough talent in the team to advance even from the top ranks in the group. After that, everything will be possible. I believe , that it will not only be advancement to the group, but also the fight for a medal,” Patrik Koyš is quoted by the official website of the Slovak Ice Hockey Association.

Matúš Holenda claims the well-known fact that cohesion and teamwork are necessary for success. “Nothing is impossible and if they form a super team, fight for each other, they can achieve great success and write a chapter in their lives that they will remember with pleasure in the future.” said Holland.

Holenda and Koyš liked to remember what it was like at the turn of 2014 and 2015 in Montreal and Toronto. The stepping stone to the precious metal was the winning quarter-final against the Czech Republic (3:0).

“We got the Canadians in the semi-finals. We dared them, but the quality was clearly on their side. After losing, we played against Sweden in the fight for bronze. I’m glad that we managed to win. Such a success was not for a long time and I see that still it cannot be repeated. I remember that at the championship we had all known each other for a long time and were friends. That was also one of the reasons why we won a medal. Coach Bokroš was a kind of pilot of the whole expedition. It suited us, everything worked like that how little” returned the Dutchman in his memories eight to nine years ago.

After the winning fight for bronze in Toronto against the Swedes (4:2), there was only time for quick celebrations. “I remember we celebrated right after the game because we didn’t have much time left in Toronto. We had to be careful not to get lost in such a big city. So we were more or less in the hotel and nearby. We were in great euphoria. When I think about it like that, I would like to go back and enjoy it again,” added the Žilina defender.

One of the most productive “Wolves” Koyš added to his teammate: “The celebrations were not extreme, since the championship is played in the middle of the season. We flew out the next day, but we were out and enjoyed it as much as possible. We celebrated more after the season at the cottage, where we met for several years.”

2023 Under-20 World Hockey Championship: Czech Republic’s Lineup, Match Schedule, and Expectations

2023 Under-20 World Hockey Championship: Czech Republic’s Lineup, Match Schedule, and Expectations

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com December 26, 2023

The Under-20 World Hockey Championship will start with a federal derby against the Czech Republic, which sent the third most experienced team among all the participants to Gothenburg. Striker Jiří Kulich, currently the best scorer in the overseas AHL, will be the biggest ace up his sleeve even after a year. The Czech captain should be one of the biggest stars of the entire championship.

At the same time, the opening meeting will be extremely crucial for the subsequent course of the group, as part of the fight for the highest position until the quarter-final battles. During the preparation, the Czech Republic checked the selection of Latvia and Finland, while they lost to a stronger opponent on paper 1:4. They scored a narrow 4:3 win against Latvia.

GOALKEEPERS

After a year, Bránkovisko lost a key figure in the form of Tomáš Suchánek, who played a decisive role in the journey to silver. A new trio of goalkeepers will stand between the three poles, and two of them can boast of experience from the under-18 championship. The injury also prevented Jan Špunar, who is one of the best goalkeepers in the Canadian WHL, from participating in the tournament.

The position of the unit should be held by the youngest of the trio Michael Hrabal. The second-highest drafted goalkeeper in this year’s draft from the 38th place is a prospect of the Arizona Coyotes and is active in the NCAA college this season. In April of this year, he worked as a unit at the U18 World Championship.

A 19-year-old also works overseas Jakub Vondras, catcher in the Canadian OHL and teammate of Dalibor Dvorský. The 2022 6th round draft pick of the Carolina Hurricanes will make his first ever major junior tournament appearance.

He should be his competitor for the number two position Michael Schnattinger from the domestic junior extra league. In the Liberec jersey, he ranks among the best goalkeepers in the competition.

DEFENDERS

The defense had to deal with huge losses as well. From the past championship, he will also represent himself in the national team a year later Tomáš Hamara, playing in the Canadian OHL. It will be the third junior championship for the prospect of the Ottawa Senators, who selected him last year in the 3rd round. Together with Aleš Čech will try to use the experience from the previous silver road.

There is also a family bond in the form of well-known names in the selection. The youngest player in the nomination is 17 years old Adam Jiříček, i.e. the brother of the better-known David Jiříček, who was declared the best defenseman of the championship a year ago and currently works in the NHL. His younger brother is a prospect for the upcoming draft and is currently in the top 15 in the rankings. Similarly, it is also the same age Tomáš Galvasbrother of Jakub Galvas (until recently a Chicago Blackhawks player).

The selection in the 3rd round of last year’s draft will also be an important part of the defense Mark Alscher, who will primarily be in charge of defensive duties. Together with Tomáš Cibulek, they will be among the key figures in the defensive ranks.

ATTACKERS

The striker arrived directly from overseas as the last reinforcement Jiří Kulich. The Czech captain was released by the Buffalo Sabers for national team needs and will thus be included among the absolute stars of the tournament. Last year’s most valuable player at the U18 World Cup, a year ago he earned inclusion in the All-Star team and is currently the best scorer in the overseas AHL. They are expected to become his teammates on offense Eduard Šalé (1. color Seattle Kraken) a Matyáš Šapovaliv (2. kolo Vegas Golden Knights).

He also passed the entry draft Jakub Stancl, who was chosen in the 4th round by St. Louis Blues. Only the 18-year-old winger is currently active in the Swedish competition. He starts in nearby Finland Adam Bareš and another 9 players will arrive from overseas. One of the resounding ones will be Ondrej Becher or Dominik Rymonwho are among the leading players in the WHL.

He will also appear in the jersey of the national team Adam Židlickýson of the legend Marek Židlický.

MATCHES WITH SLOVAKIA

Slovakia has been waiting for a victory against the Czech Republic for 8 long years. This is largely due to the fact that since the 2015 championship, these two teams have only met twice, and the last time was in the summer of 2022. The Czech Republic managed to beat Slovakia 5-4 when Gabriel Szturc decided with his accurate strike just 2 minutes before the end of the match.

The last victory of the team from the Tatras was born at the “bronze” championship in 2015, when they beat the Czech Republic 3:0 in the quarter-finals. If we look at the results from the basic groups, Slovakia has beaten its rival only once in its entire history. It happened in December 2001 after a 1:0 result.

A CHANCE AT THE WORLD CUP

In addition to the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the main favorite in the form of the USA will appear in the group, followed by Switzerland and a newcomer from Norway. The federal derby could thus significantly influence the fight for the 2nd place in the group. This could help them on their way to defending silver, which will be extremely difficult this year. The Czech Republic waited up to 18 years to win the precious metal from the junior championship, so the main goal will be to advance to the quarter-finals from the leading places. We will be able to consider everything in addition as a surprise.

This is exactly what captain Jiří Kulich will try to do, who, according to paper assumptions, could be one of the best scorers in the tournament and significantly help the team on the way to eventual success. The situation in the goal area will also tell a lot, where Michael Hrabal could increase the chances with his performances.

Slovak Under-20 Ice Hockey Team Enters World Championship in Sweden: What to Expect and Predictions

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com December 25, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

On Tuesday, the Slovak under-20 ice hockey team will enter the world championship of this age category in Gothenburg, Sweden, against their peers from the Czech Republic.

Already on Tuesday at 12:00 p.m., Slovakia’s ice hockey players will play their first match at the Under-20 World Championship against the Czech Republic. Why will this be an extremely important duel? What are our chances and why could we win a medal? And where are our strongest and weakest points? All this is analyzed in a large overview by the moderator Marián Lontoš, ŠPORT.sk editor Martin Toth-Vaňo and Denník Šport editor Matej Deraj.

Striker Dalibor Dvorský hopes that the Slovak selection will experience a successful start to the tournament. “We have to focus on our performance. If we play our game, I think we will win because we have great quality in the team.” said the 18-year-old native of Zvolen in a video of the Slovak Ice Hockey Association (SZĽH).

A year ago at the MSJ in Canada, the Slovaks made it to the quarter-finals, in which they lost to the local youngsters after a tough fight 3:4 after extra time. Canadian hockey players finally won the gold. Even the mentioned Czechs, who will be the first opponents of the Slovak team at this year’s championship, did not stop them in the final.

Another attacker, Martin Mišiak, is aware that it will be a difficult duel on Tuesday, as it will be a so-called federal derby. “I think we’re all ready and we can’t wait for it to finally start. The Czechs will skate very well, so we have to play 100 percent right from the start. I think it will mainly be about us and when we play our hockey, it will be fine.” Mišiak noted.

The Slovakian under-20 hockey team spent perhaps the most beautiful Christmas in Sweden in recent years before the start of the junior championship. At the cottage in Kinna, 50 kilometers from Gothenburg, she was hosted by the large family of Zdenko Sojka with his wife Katka and five daughters with a traditional Slovak generous dinner. Born in Central Slovakia, he has lived in Scandinavia for over twenty years. The portal hockeyslovakia.sk informed about it.

The young Slovaks will also fight against the Swiss (December 27), Norwegians (December 29) and the Americans (December 31) to advance from the basic B-group to the quarterfinals.

19-Year-Old NHL Rising Star Tristan Luneau Withdraws from Junior World Cup Due to Illness

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com December 24, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Despite the fact that he is only 19 years old and the Anaheim Ducks drafted him last year “up” in the 2nd round from the overall 53rd place, guard Tristan Luneau has already played 7 games in the NHL and was supposed to be part of the Canadian team at the upcoming Junior World Cup in hockey.

The preparation for the world championship of under-20 hockey players in Sweden is in full swing, and the national teams are fine-tuning the last details right at the venue of the tournament. Friday’s preseason game between Canada and Switzerland was marred by an ugly foul on Canadian star and top draft pick Macklin Celebrini.

The Canadian Ice Hockey Association announced yesterday on social networks that the defenseman Tristan Luneau dropped out of the final nomination due to illness.

Tristan Luneau was supposed to be among the pillars of the “maple leaves” at the junior championship in Sweden. Last year in the QMJHL he collected 100 points (22+78) as a defenseman. In the current season in the AHL, he has a balance of 6 games and 2 assists, in the NHL he played 7 duels with an individual statistic of 1+2.

Canada is in the A-group at the upcoming World Cup in hockey under 20 years, in which they will meet the junior selections of Finland, Sweden, Germany and Latvia.

Canadian Under-20 Hockey Star Macklin Celebrini’s Controversial Foul in Preseason Game Against Switzerland

The Canadian under-20 national team competed against Switzerland in Friday’s warm-up match. The defenders of the gold managed to beat the “Helvéts” with a result of 6:3, when the triumph was decided by a great middle part of the match. The meeting was marked by a dangerous incident, when the Canadian forward Macklin Celebrini attacked the Swiss Leo Braillard from behind at the beginning of the second half of the match. The referees evaluated the intervention as illegal and awarded Celebrini a higher 5-minute penalty. The IIHF itself was to decide on his additional punishment the following day.

“When you see a guy like Celebrini, with that kind of ability, it’s clear that he’s not trying to hurt anyone. It’s an unfortunate moment. I think he feels really bad,” said Celebrini’s teammate Conor Geekie.

Only 18-year-old Swiss representative was forced to leave the meeting and did not return to the game. His very start in the opening match on December 27 against Slovakia is still questionable at this point. “I heard he’s quite well. There’s probably something wrong with his neck. We have to look at it again and we’ll see later.” Switzerland coach Marcel Jenni described the state of health of his charge.

The IIHF Disciplinary Commission reported on Saturday that Canadian Macklin Celebrini will not be subject to further disciplinary action and will be able to participate in the championship without additional punishment.

“After reviewing the incident, the 2024 IIHF World Junior Ice Hockey Championship Disciplinary Committee has determined that while the game’s major penalty against Canada’s Macklin Celebrini was justified, no additional penalty is necessary,” it is stated in the declaration section.

The potential unit of the 2024 NHL draft recorded 2 assists in the match, in the previous meeting against Denmark under 25, on the other hand, he had a goal and two assists.

The Canadians will start their action at the tournament on Tuesday, December 26 at 2:30 p.m. against Finland.
