Germany Makes History with 4:3 Win Over Finland at 2024 U20 World Cup

The German hockey players rewrote history and beat Finland 4:3 in their first appearance at the 2024 U20 World Cup. “Suomi” lost for the second time in a row and significantly complicated the situation in Group A.

The hockey players of Germany surprisingly won the under-20 world championship over the favored peers from Finland 4:3.

The goalkeeper laid the foundation for the German victory Philipp Dietl, who faced 43 pucks heading between the three posts in the meeting. He maintained a save success rate of 93.02% and was deservedly named the best German player of the match. Since the 2022/23 season, he has caught only 28 duels at the club level.

It was a historic victory for the Germans, who claimed their first ever win against Finland at the junior championship. Before being selected from the country of a thousand lakes, they lost 25 times in a row. They crossed sticks for the first time in 1977 and until yesterday they had not lost once with a fantastic score of 141:31.

At the start of the second half, the match was bursting with goals, when 5,077 spectators witnessed three accurate shots within 98 seconds. He put Finland in the lead for the first time Kasper Halttunensubsequently equalized Niklas Huebner and restored the leadership of “Suomi”. Samu Bau. From the 24th minute, however, the above-mentioned goalkeeper Philipp Dietl pulled the blinds and resisted the high shooting activity of the Finnish finishers, who sent 20 shots at the German goal in the middle part and outshot the opponent by a ratio of 17:5 in the third period.

Only the German hockey players were on the offensive, and they repeated the hussar feat of the Finns 10 minutes later and scored twice within 91 seconds. He scored the winning goal Veit Oswald. Only 19-year-old attacker, thanks to two accurate hits immediately in the first meeting of the tournament, equalized the two-point gain from the previous junior championship, where he started in five fights. At the club level, he works in the German DEL in the EHC Munich team. In the national team, he wears the number 13 on his jersey, paying tribute to his father’s career. He is a member of the EV Landshut team, which brought up a pair of German representatives Tobias Rieder and Tom Kühnhackl for the NHL.

The introduction to the tournament is not going well for the Finnish team to Niklas Kokk. The second-highest drafted 2022 goaltender from the Seattle Kraken has a poor save percentage of 87.72% after two games, and in yesterday’s game he made 24 saves with a below average success rate of 85.71%.

The Finns’ elite attack in the composition also falls short of expectations Konsta Helenius – To be Hameenaho – Janne Naukkarinen. They sent 14 shots at the opponent’s goal in the course of two meetings, 10 of which were aimed at the German sanctuary. Despite the fact that the first two names are the team’s busiest forwards, the members of the first offensive formation continue to wait for the opening Canadian point.

After two meetings, the Finns have 0 points with a score of 5:9, and in the next part of the “20” championship, Latvia (December 29 at 2:30 p.m.) and home Sweden (December 31 at 2:30 p.m.) await them.

Slovakian Under-20 Hockey Players Secure Impressive Victory Over Switzerland at Junior World Championship

Slovakian under-20 hockey players also won the second match of the junior world championship. In Wednesday’s meeting, the B-groups defeated their peers from Switzerland 3:0 in Gothenburg, Sweden. The great support of the Slovak team was the goalkeeper Adam Gajan, who neutralized all 36 attempts of the “Helvetii”.

Slovak under-20 hockey players successfully entered the junior world championship. In their opening match, they defeated their peers from the Czech Republic 6:2. In the next match, Ivan Fenes’ team will face Switzerland. The opening ceremony is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. Watch the ONLINE broadcast of the match with audio commentary on ŠPORT.sk!

The Slovaks faced a tenacious opponent, who shot from every possible position, but Gajan held his team several times even in the face of the Swiss. The Slovakian 20 team managed the duel on the tactical side and Samuel Honzek, Peter Repčík and Servác Petrovský scored goals. The latter is the top scorer of the tournament with three goals. The 19-year-old Minnesota Wild prospect also leads the Canadian points standings after two duels with four points (3+1).

In the next match, Ivan Feneš’s team will face Norway on Friday, December 29, also at 12:00 p.m. The Americans are still waiting for them in the basic group (December 31 at 12:00 p.m.).

SLOVAKIA – Switzerland 3:0 (1:0, 0:0, 2:0) Goals: 9. Honzek (Repčík), 59. Repčík (Mešár), 60. Petrovský. Judges: Eriksson (Swedish), Hinterdobler (German)- Heffner (German), Riecken (Austrian), expulsions: 5:1, overpowering and weakening: 0:0, 986 spectators.

Assemblies:
SLOVAKIA: Gajan – Nátny, Štrbák, Žabka, Kmec, Pišoja, Radivojevič, Moško – Sýkora, Petrovský, Mešár – Mišiak, Dvorský, Čiernik – Honzek, Repčík, Pekarčík – Žlnka, Dej, Suchý.
SWITZERLAND: Beglieri – Terraneo, Dionicio, Muggli, Füllemann, Ustinkov, Bünzli, Christe – Müller, Taibel, Schild – Rod, Reinhard, G. Weber – Braillard, E. Meier, Reber – S. Meier, Gredig, Jenni.

In the first act, the Swiss solved all situations easily and used every opportunity for a shooting attempt. They outshot the Slovaks 14:6, but they were not effective and in the 9th minute the opponent punished them. Repčík played a significant role in the opening goal of the match, after whose individual penetration Honzek got the puck behind the back of the Swiss goalkeeper Beglieri. In the 15th minute, Slovakia’s goalkeeper Gajan held up, who neutralized Füllemann’s attempt, and the subsequent shot only hit the side post.

At the beginning of the middle part of the game, the Slovaks had the opportunity to bounce back the opponent with a difference of two goals. The Swiss striker Schild fouled the escaping Honzek while backchecking, for which the head referee ordered a penalty shot. Honzek tried to move the goalkeeper, but with a backhand he only sent the puck into his stick.

The Slovaks had great support in Gajan in the final act as well, when he kept his team in the 44th minute – in a power play, he hid Weber’s tutuk in the trap. The Slovakian goalkeeper did not save even in the 50th minute, when he deflected Müller’s attempt with his shoulder. In the 54th minute, thanks to Sýkor, the Slovaks won the first numerical advantage in the match, but paradoxically, the Swiss had the best chance in it. In the offensive zone, Strbák hesitated on the blue line, to whom the puck was poked by Gredig, but he did not convert his escape into a goal. In the end, Switzerland threw everything into the attack and, in a game without a goalkeeper, scored twice into an empty net from Repčík and Petrovský.

USA Hockey Players Dominate in U20 World Championship Match against Norway

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com December 27, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The Americans and Norwegians met in Gothenburg, Sweden, in the second match of Group B at the Under-20 World Championship tournament. The favorite of the meeting was clearly given in advance, but the course of the duel did not clearly indicate that. In the end, the favored American hockey players rejoiced in a match full of eliminations, but the northerners were definitely not far from a big surprise.

USA hockey players confirmed their position as favorites when they defeated Norway 4:1 in the “Slovak” B-group in their opening match at the U20 WC.

Already the number of shooting attempts on both sides after the first part of the game clearly indicated that Norway will not be an easy opponent for the Americans. Well, at least not as simple as overseas hockey players initially thought. The first third did not go significantly differently than expected, the USA immediately burned several goals. The chances of Snuggerud, Brindley or Perreault can certainly be included among the most serious opportunities. But goalkeeper Markus Stensrud confirmed his genius.

It was the end of the opening twenty minutes that started an unprecedented passage of the game accompanied by Norwegian dominance. In the last minute of the first third of the duel, the northerners relentlessly bit the opponent, the favorite also had to be saved by a great goalkeeper Trey Augustine. But that was just a foreshadowing of what was to come.

The Norwegians started the second period with a numerical advantage, in its opening five minutes they spent almost 6 minutes on the ice surface in a more favorable condition. They missed a few seconds even in a power play by two players. During their stay in the offensive, they shot several times, they combined the puck on their sticks really skillfully, and probably few would argue that this is a rookie in the elite category of the tournament.

Pressure, bravery and sacrifice were not enough for the outsider to score a goal. The score of the meeting was opened in its half by prospect St. Louis Blues, American Jimmy Snuggerud. By the end of the second half the score was 3-0, Gavin Brindley also scored twice. One of his two hits came on the power play.

The Norwegians scored only in the third period, even in their own weakness. Their assistant captain succeeded in a separate escape Petter Vesterheim, who played an excellent match. However, the favorite still scored in the given American power play, scoring the final accurate hit of the duel Isaac Howard.

Considering the overall course of the confrontation between one of the biggest favorites of the tournament and a newcomer, it must be noted that the Norwegians played a good duel. Only the third period was clearly inadequate on their part, especially the sequence after the fourth conceded goal, when their chances were only very theoretical. The Americans really struggled with them and in the first half of the meeting they were not sure.

The goalkeepers of both teams can be identified as the best men of the match. He scored up to 40 successful interventions Markus Stensrud. The Norwegian keeper of the space between the posts had a success rate of almost 91 percent at the end, he took care of really extraordinary stops of the puck. However, his counterpart also excelled on the opposite side of the ice Trey Augustine. The goaltender, drafted by the Detroit Red Wings, dropped only one puck and recorded a roughly 96 percent success rate.

If it weren’t for his men in goal, the overall course of the duel and its final result could have been diametrically different. But more importantly, the match showed that the Americans are not unplayable, and on the other hand, that the Norwegians, as newcomers, will definitely not be the slapstick of the group. Every other opponent of both of these units, including Slovakia, can draw very important knowledge from this confrontation.

Slovakia Dominates Czech Republic in Junior World Hockey Championship Opener

A different atmosphere will prevail on each of the two banks of the Moravia after the opening day of the Junior World Hockey Championship. While the Slovaks are floating in the clouds after a comfortable 6:2 win, the defenders of the final participation from the last tournament from the Czech Republic received, as they themselves admitted, a real slap in the face in the federal derby.

“It’s definitely a slap in the face. And at the same time a good alarm clock! It was necessary, we didn’t play well at all.” spoke for hokej.cz the captain of the Czech national team, Jiří Kulich. The Czechs stopped doing well in the match from the second period, which was torn apart by their unnecessary fouls.

Slovak ice hockey players have had a great start to the Under-20 World Championships when they defeated the Czech Republic 6:2. After the first period, which they lost 0:1, came a dominant performance in the next two. Coach Ivan Feneš pointed out after the match that there is still room for improvement.

“We made some silly fouls. A lot of fouls… Power plays are exhausting our players,” noted Kulich. “After the first goal, we stopped playing, we let the goalkeeper take it and we didn’t work as well as we should have.” Coach Jiří Augusta also commented on the Czech disaster in the 2nd and 3rd period after the match.

A bad first period, but there was a tremendous improvement in the second and finally a 6:2 win at the start of the U20 World Championship against a rival from the Czech Republic. Slovak hockey players were particularly satisfied with the team’s strength after the match.

“I also wonder what happened from the 2nd period. We stopped playing and the second goal we conceded ate away at us. However, the basis was discipline. We had too many exclusions, except for fifteen minutes of the first period, it is difficult to judge. Towards the end of this third, we were losing pucks, we were passing them to the Slovaks,” stated Augustus.

The coach admitted the underestimation

“We started to play lightly, we kept the pucks. We thought it would go away because the first period was decent from us. However, the opponent increased the speed, got on the horse and played power plays. The game was hectic, we played weakened and many players did not get into the game,” stated August, who did not spare his charges criticism.

“You can’t play like that, the boys know it, we remind them, but it happened again. Then the opponent gets wings and our confidence is gone.” adds Augusta.

“The guys listened to what was on my mind in the dressing room. Now it’s all over, we have to start preparing for the game in Norway. Every next match will only get harder. And I just want the players to go all out. There were many passages where we were lighthearted. We can’t afford that tomorrow,” concluded the coach.
