New Berlin – A traffic stop attempt by New Berlin police escalated into a pursuit ending with a crash at the Hale Interchange on I-43 Wednesday. The driver, a 36-year-old man from East Troy, was arrested after fleeing the scene.
The incident began when officers responded to a report of a possible intoxicated driver in the parking lot of a gas station on College Avenue near Racine Avenue. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver sped away, initiating a chase northbound on I-43 toward Milwaukee. The vehicle ultimately crashed into a concrete barrier at the Hale Interchange, went off the roadway, and the driver fled on foot.
With assistance from the Greenfield Police Department, officers located and arrested the East Troy man. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the crash and was transported to a local hospital.No officers were injured during the pursuit or arrest.
Authorities suspect drug impairment was a contributing factor in the incident.Northbound traffic at the Hale Interchange was slowed for approximately two hours while law enforcement investigated the crash and managed traffic flow. The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office assisted with traffic control and documentation. The incident remains under inquiry.
