Electric Boat Expands โConnecticut Footprint with Crystal Mall Acquisition
Waterford, CT – Electric Boat (EB), a leading submarine โคmanufacturer and a subsidiary ofโฃ General Dynamics, announced Thursday teh purchase โฃof Crystal Mall โคin Waterford, Connecticut. The acquisition, encompassing the โentirety of the โคproperty excluding the former Sears location, marksโค a critically important expansion of EB’s presence in Southeastern Connecticutโ as the โcompany ramps up production of Columbia– and Virginia-class submarines.
This purchase builds on EB’s earlier acquisition of โคthe former Macy’s store atโ the mall in June, both moves driven by a growing โขneed for office andโฃ technical space. According to Mark Rayha, President of General Dynamicsโค Electric Boat, the Waterford locationโ presents aโ “unique โคpossibilityโฆto consolidate support functions and โfocus โour waterfront footprint on efficientlyโค delivering the submarines our nation needs.”
Theโข repurposed mall will house expanded engineering, training, and software โฃgrowth operations crucial to supportingโ the ongoing submarine programs. Electric Boat anticipates the facility will eventually employ between 4,000 and 5,000โ personnel, with a โคprojectedโ move-in timeframe beginning in mid-2027, pending necessary renovations and refurbishment.
Senator Chris Murphy expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating he looksโ forward to collaborating with Electric Boat to ensure a “smooth transition” of the siteโ into a “cutting-edge submarineโ facility.”โ
Electric Boat has committed to working โคwith current tenants of Crystal โคMall toโข facilitate the transition,โ minimizing disruption as the property is transformed to meet the needs โof the expanding defense contractor.โ The acquisition underscores Electric Boat’sโ commitment to the region and it’sโ vital role in national defense.
