Charlie Kirk Shot at Utah Valley university Event
Conservative commentator and podcaster Charlie Kirk was shot during an event at Utah Valley University (UVU) in โฃUtah on April 21, 2024. A single shot was fired from approximately 200 meters away, originating from a university building, according to CNN. Kirk, founder and director of the โคconservative network Turning Point USA, was transported from the scene by his security detail.
Initial reports from the university stated a โsuspect was in custody, but this was later retracted. Police have launched โคan investigation,โค and FBI agents are “closely monitoring” the situation.
Kirk was on the first stop of his “American comeback Tour,” known for its “Prove Meโ Wrong” format, encouraging debate and discussion with those whoโค disagreeโข with his views. Prior toโข the shooting, a man reportedly approached the eventโ tent and asked about the number of transgender shooters.โ He received a response, followed by a second question from the same individual, before a shot was fired.
Kirk has aโ meaningful online following, withโ 5.2 million followers on X (formerly Twitter) and 7.3 million on TikTok. Turning Point USA is a non-profit organization focused on promoting conservative ideas on American universityโ campuses.
The incident drew immediate reactions from โฃprominent political figures. US Senator JD Vance posted,”Pray for King Charlie,forโ a really good guy and youngโฃ dad.” โฃFormer President Donaldโฃ Trump stated, “We all have to pray to King Charlie, whom โฃthey shot. A great guy from head to toe. God bless you!” Trump previously credited Kirk with contributing โto prosperous youth outreach during his last presidential election campaign.
Utah Governor Spencerโ Cox condemned the violence, stating that everyone involved wouldโค be held accountable and emphasizing that violence has no โplace in public life. He โcalledโ for Americans to โcondemn the incident, offering prayers for Kirk, his โขfamily, and those affected.
Videos circulatingโ on social media, confirmed as authentic by BBC, show attendees gathered around a white tent where Kirk โฃwas speaking when a loud sound – โthe gunshot – wasโ heard, prompting the crowd to disperse.
Police confirmed the shootingโ on X at approximately 10:10 AM Hungarian time, stating Kirk was injured and removed from the scene by security. They โคalso announced an investigation and the arrest of a suspect.
Following the shooting,โ UVU closed its campus and cancelled classes until further notice. โคFormer President Joe Biden also responded, calling for an end to political violence and offering prayers forโข Kirk’s โfamily and loved ones.
