Hollywood Studios Sue Chinese โAI Firm, Alleging โCopyright Theft in Image Generation Service
Los Angeles, CA – Comcast, Walt Disney, and Warner Bros. discovery have jointly โขfiled โฃa copyright infringement lawsuit against Chinese AI company Minimax,โ alleging its Hailuo โimage generation service is โbuilt on stolen intellectual property. Theโ case, opened in California โคdistrict court on Tuesday, โmarks a meaningful โescalation โin the ongoing battle between Hollywood and โAI developers over copyright protection.
The studios โคclaim Minimax aggressively โleveraged iconic, โฃcopyrighted charactersโ to market Hailuo, branding it as a “Hollywood โฃstudio in your pocket.” According to the lawsuit, โฃusers can simply input text prompts to generate images and videos featuring characters like Darth Vader from Star Wars, โtheโ Minions from Despicable Me, and Wonder Womanโข – all brandedโ with the Minimax Hailuo logo.
Theโข complaint allegesโ Minimax ignored repeated requests from the studios to implement reasonable safeguards against copyright โinfringement within its AI service. Studios argue the company actively encouraged the unauthorized useโข of protectedโ characters, effectively treating them as โคpublic domain.
“A responsible approach toโค AI innovation is essential, and today’s action against Minimax underscores our collective commitment to protecting copyright laws, nonetheless ofโ where infringements originate,” a joint statement from the companies read.
Minimax hasโข yet toโค respond toโค requests โfor comment.
The studios are seeking financial โdamages – โincluding profits gained from the alleged copyright violationsโข – and a courtโฃ order to โhalt theโ infringing activity. They aim to prevent minimax from continuing to offer the Hailuo service โwithout implementing adequate copyright protections.
This lawsuit follows โคsimilar legal action taken against Midjourneyโ earlier this year by Disney and Universal,โค also alleging unauthorized reproduction of copyrighted material.Warner Bros.Discovery also filed suit against Midjourney this โmonth. These casesโ are part of a growing wave of โlegal challenges from copyrightโค holders – including authors, news organizations, and music labels โ- targeting AI companies like OpenAI, Microsoft, โand Anthropic over the unauthorizedโ useโฃ of copyrighted content โฃin AIโค training and output.
Minimax, which operates a proprietary AI model, is reportedly seeking a โvaluation exceedingโ $4โข billion and is among theโ first โChinese AI companies to pursue an initial public offering. The company boasts over 157 million individual users โacrossโข moreโ than 200 countries and regions, and servesโข over 50,000 businesses and developers in over 90โข countries.
