KIEV – Military Ukraine said troop Russia On Wednesday (12/28/2022) mortar and artillery attacks on the city of Kherson recently liberated by Kiev troops intensified. Russia is also exerting constant pressure along the country’s eastern front.

“Russia fired 33 missiles from multiple rocket launchers at civilian targets in Kherson in the 24 hours through early Wednesday morning,” the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said in a report Wednesday morning quoted by Channel News Asia.

But Russia has denied that its attacks have targeted civilians.

Russian troops left the city of Kherson last month in one of Ukraine’s most significant victories in the war. The Kherson region, which lies at the mouth of the great Dnipro River and serves as the gateway to the Russian-annexed Crimea, is strategically important.

Kherson residents’ joy at the city’s liberation quickly turned to fear amid the relentless Russian shelling from the eastern bank of the Dnipro, and many fled.

“Russian troops bombed the maternity ward of a hospital in Kherson,” Zelenskiy’s deputy chief of staff Kyrylo Tymoshenko said on Telegram.

“No one was injured and staff and patients were moved to shelters,” he added.

Reuters could not immediately verify the report.

Ukraine says a Russian attack killed at least 10 people and injured 58 in Kherson on Saturday.

FLY – Ukraine’s proposal for a so-called “peace summit” would not have succeeded if Russia had not been invited.

Russia’s Deputy First Permanent Representative to the United Nations Dmitry Polyansky confirmed this on Tuesday (12/27/2022).

Writing in Telegram, the diplomat referred to the idea floated by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba on Monday of holding such an event under the auspices of the United Nations in late February, on the anniversary of the Russian military operation against the Ukraine.

The office of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said it was ready to mediate the talks, but only if all sides agreed.

However, Kuleba also demanded that before Moscow can join the negotiating table, Russia must face an “international tribunal” and be prosecuted for its alleged war crimes.

Polyansky also rejected Kiev’s accusations that Russia would become an “illegal” member of the United Nations Security Council and the United Nations at large.

He denounced such claims as “nonsense” that no one paid attention to.

“If you try to combine these two stories, they are mutually exclusive. what ‘peace summit’ could take place without Russia?” she asked, adding however that it was not difficult to imagine such an event taking place without Ukraine.

OTHER – European Union (EU) has little chance of stopping blackout in the middle energy crisis exacerbated by the Ukrainian conflict and must prepare for its effects.

This was the alarm raised by Austrian Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner on Tuesday (12/27/2022).

Speaking to Die Welt, the Austrian minister rated the possibility of power outages in parts of the EU very highly in the near future.

“The risk of widespread power outages has once again increased significantly as a result of the war in Ukraine,” he said.

“The question is not if it will happen, but when,” the minister said Russia TodayWednesday (27/12/2022).

Tanner also claimed, without providing evidence, that Russian President Vladimir Putin viewed hacking attacks on Western energy networks as a form of “hybrid warfare.”

“We don’t have to pretend this is just a theory. We have to be prepared for blackouts in Austria and Europe,” she said.

According to Tanner, the Austrian military and other government services regularly conduct relevant exercises. They have also raised awareness through a campaign to distribute leaflets in public places on what to do in the event of a power outage.

When asked whether such an action could trigger panic, the minister rejected this hypothesis.

FLY – Western sanctions imposed on Russia over the Ukraine conflict have had a major impact on the European economy, while the United States (US) is the only actor to benefit from these restrictions.

This statement was made by Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov on Saturday (12/24/2022) amid ongoing fighting in Ukraine.

Speaking to the Asharq News newspaper, he believes Western sanctions have helped Washington achieve its goals. “Their supply of oil and gas to the European market has increased,” Siluanov said.

“US energy shipments, however, have proved costly for Europeans, resulting in skyrocketing inflation and reduced competitiveness for European businesses,” Siluanov said.

According to him, “Western sanctions and the explosion that damaged the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines at the end of September should supply Europe with more expensive liquefied (natural) gas than America.”

“America wins, Europe loses,” he said.

Moscow has labeled the sabotage a terrorist attack, arguing that the United States benefited most from the blast.

While Washington has denied any involvement, Secretary of State Antony Blinken described the incident as a “tremendous opportunity” for Europe to move away from Russian energy.
