Comic Book Authors Plan Historic “Girlcott” ofโค Angoulรชme Festival Following Allegations of Sexism and Exploitation
Angoulรชme, France – A wave of outrage is โขbuilding within the comicsโ community, culminating inโฃ aโค planned “girlcott” of โthe 2026 Angoulรชme International Comics Festival. The โคprotest stems from allegations of sexism and unfair treatment leveled against artist Chloรฉ, and broader concerns about the festival’s handling ofโ gender-based โฃviolence and its increasingly commercial โฃfocus.
The movement gained โฃmomentum after a WhatsApp group formed in response to the โฃappointment of RC to lead โthe festival, quickly evolving into a platformโค for discussionโ andโข coordinated action. Designer and feminist Mirion Malle leveraged the group’s energy, publishing Instagram posts โdetailing the festival crisis andโค the specifics of Chloรฉ’s case, garnering millions of views. According to โMalle, “Instagram allows us toโ inform the public, go beyond theโข comicsโ world, and show that artists are not disconnected, but precarious workers like any other.” She emphasized that while “the scandal created a spark,”โข it doesn’t diminish โคthe ongoing harm caused by Violences Sexistes et Sexuelles โ(VSS) – โขgender-based and sexual violence. “The limits โขhave been crossed many times. This has to stop.”
A manifesto published today, signed by 285 prominent โขauthors, echoes these concerns, demanding “a more ethical treatment of individuals (โฆ) so that comics are considered as a cultural good, accessible to allโ and not as a pure commercial product.”
Chloรฉ is currently pursuing legal action, with a hearing scheduled at โthe industrial tribunal this โweek and a hearing with โคan investigating judge in Angoulรชme on November 27 following her criminal complaint. A โคfundraising campaign hasโค been launched to support her, with โฃauthors offering artwork forโข sale to aid unemployed and financially vulnerable women โขimpacted by similar issues.
The planned “girlcott” represents a historic stand against systemic โขissues within the industry and theโข festival itself, signaling a growing demand for a more equitable and respectful environment for comic book creators. โSupporters are united in their message: “Chloรฉ โฃwe believe you!”
