Hungarian Election 2026: Reactions to Péter Magyar’s Speech & Political Fallout

Budapest – Political tensions are escalating in Hungary ahead of the April 12th parliamentary elections, as leaders across the political spectrum respond to a Sunday event hosted by the Tisza Párt. Magyar Péter, the party’s president, outlined a series of promises alongside criticism of the current government.

László Toroczkai, president of Mi Hazánk Mozgalom, expressed skepticism regarding Péter’s condemnation of illegal immigration, posting on X that Péter has “sat into the globalist faction directing the EU, which wants exactly these things.” Toroczkai alleges that Péter will be allowed to deviate from the faction’s discipline until after the election, at which point he will be compelled to follow a “liberal globalist tune,” characterizing the Tisza Párt’s current stance as a “farce.”

Toroczkai further criticized the Tisza Párt for, in his view, failing to take action on behalf of workers and small and medium-sized enterprises. He also questioned the sincerity of István Kapitány’s condemnation of environmental pollution at the Samsung factory in Göd, noting Kapitány’s previous role as a global vice president at Shell, which Toroczkai described as “one of the world’s most polluting giant corporations.”

Gábor Vona, president of the Második Reformkor Párt, voiced agreement with Péter’s assertion that a country’s leader must be able to accept criticism. He also supported Péter’s pledge that, in the event of a change in government, “no one will ever again be labeled a traitor or vilified simply for having a different opinion.” Vona’s party explicitly called on all political leaders to refrain from pressuring the media, labeling critics with pejoratives, or inciting their supporters against those with opposing views, and instead embrace substantive policy debates.

Péter Takács, a health state secretary, dismissed Péter’s speech as “pathetic and ‘gaggy’,” suggesting the party leader’s évértékelő was unsuccessful and that he would “re-crawl into hospitals” during his nationwide tour beginning Monday. Takács alluded to reports surrounding radnaimark.hu, offering Péter the opportunity to “lock himself in a hospital for a few minutes to calm down.” He requested that Péter refrain from “hiding in the toilet” afterward, referencing an alleged incident at the Péterfy Sándor Utcai psychiatric hospital.

According to web search results, Toroczkai László stated on January 17, 2026, that Magyar Péter and the Tisza Párt are dangerous, and that a radical change in Hungary would cost 3-4 trillion forints. He believes his program is being stolen by both Fidesz and the Tisza Párt. (Népszava, January 17, 2026)
