Nvidia โCEO Jensen Huangโข Says Familyโ Likely Couldn’t โAfford US Immigration Under Trump-Era Visa Fees
WASHINGTONโข D.C. โ- Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has stated his family likely would not haveโฃ been able to immigrate to the United States under recently proposed โimmigration policies implementedโ during theโ Donald Trump administration. โThe policies โขinclude a USD 100,000 fee per H-1B temporary work visa, granted to โforeign professionals with specialized skills.
Huang,โฃ born in Taiwan and raisedโ in Thailand, โฃmoved to the US with his sister โat age nine, followed two years later by his parents. He currently has an estimated netโฃ worth of USD 164 billion (IDR โ2,700 trillion).
“I โขdon’t think my family will be able to pay the 100 โคthousandโข dollar fee, so theโ prospect for my family โขand for myself to come here may never happen,”โฃ Huang said in a CNBC interview, as reported by detikINET.
The proposed fee increase has sparked debate within the US technology industry, โwhich relies heavily on foreign workers, notably from India and China.โ Data from US Citizenship and Immigration Services โขshows Amazon sponsorsโค the mostโ H-1B visas โข- over 10,000 in fiscal year 2025 – followed by โฃMicrosoft, Meta, Apple, and Google, each with โคover 4,000 approvals.
Huang emphasized the importance of immigration to the American ideal. “Immigration is the foundation of the Americanโ dream. The idea that anyone can come to America and, through hard work and a little talent, build a better futureโ for themselves,” โขhe stated, adding his โparents sought opportunities and a better life โขfor their โฃfamily in theโฃ US.
Nvidia currently sponsors approximately 1,400 work visas and Huang confirmed the company will continue to cover H-1B visa costs for its โoverseas employees, while hoping for future policy improvements.โ
Despite his personal โcircumstances,โข Huang expressedโ optimism that the changes would stillโข allow โขthe US to attract top global talent.
Other tech leaders have voiced support for โthe policy. Netflix CEOโฃ Reed Hastings called theโค new fee rules “a great solution,” stating they would focus H-1B visas on high-value employment, eliminate the lottery โฃsystem, โand provide visa holders withโค certainty. OpenAI โฃCEO Sam Altman similarly stated,โฃ “We โฃneed toโฃ attract the brightest people to this โcountry. Simplifying the process and providing financial incentivesโข is theโ right step.”
