## Virginia‘s Focusโข on โAccountability in โcorrections Yields Positive Results
As of january 1, 2024,โฃ Virginia implementedโ a new โapproach to corrections centered around accountability and positive reinforcement, known as the Virginia Model. This โinitiative โaims to enhance safety and security for both corrections staff and the inmate population within the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC).
The Virginia Model operatesโค on a system of incentives and swift sanctions. inmates demonstrating consistent โคaccountability andโ positive behavior become eligible โคfor transferโค to Virginia โคModel facilities, unlocking a range ofโ benefits. Conversely, those who fail to meet behavioralโฃ expectations are promptly removed from the program.
Driven by a long-held belief in the power of personalโ responsibility – stemming from experienceโ as a former โcircuit โcourt judgeโ and Virginia Parole Board chairman โฃ- the program provides inmates withโฃ opportunities to improve their conditions throughโข demonstrable change.The Lawrenceville Correctional Center, โคafter undergoing improvements, became the first โfacility to fullyโ implement โthe Virginia Model. Eligible inmates, defined โคas those with no major convictions in the preceding โฃfour years and โคa clean record regarding drug use, assaults, and โsafety-threatening behaviors, gained access to โbenefits including an expanded food menu, upgraded mattresses,โ increased programmingโ opportunities, inmate-lead workshops andโค groups, extended visitation rights, and โaccess โคto additional resources.
Theโ impetus behindโค the Virginia Model was a desire to build upon an alreadyโ respected corrections system, recognized nationally and internationally, while โprioritizing safety.โ Data collected between the program’s launch andโฃ June 14, 2025, demonstrates notable improvements at โLawrenceville Correctional Center:
* A 100% reduction in confirmed drug overdoses and drug overdose deaths.
* โA 100% reduction in โขserious assaults on inmates.
* A 100% reduction in total fights.
* โค A 94% reduction inโ positive drug tests.* A โ75% reduction in cellโข phone seizures.
Building on this success, the VADOC is expanding the Virginia Model toโ include Buckingham Correctional Center, Dillwynโ Correctional Center, and Clusterโข S1 at Greensville Correctional Center, effective September 1st. This expansion involved the transfer of eligible inmates to these โคfacilities over the summer.
The VADOC encourages โขinmates to strive for โคeligibility and urges familyโข members to support their loved ones inโค taking personal accountability. Family support is seen as a key component in fostering positive change.
While the Virginia Model is being expanded, the VADOCโข will continueโ to house ineligible inmates at โappropriate security levels to ensure public safety. The agency remains committed to providing evidence-based education and programming to support prosperous reentry into society. The continued success of the Virginia Model is expectedโ to โคfurther enhance the safety and security of the Commonwealthโข of Virginia, benefiting corrections staff, inmates, and all residents.
