The governments of the United States and Canada activated travel alerts following the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). The alerts, issued late Friday, advise citizens to avoid travel to several Mexican states, citing an increased risk of violence in the wake of the cartel leader’s reported demise.
Mexican security forces reportedly killed El Mencho during a military operation in the state of Jalisco on February 22, 2026, according to multiple sources. Whereas Mexican authorities have not officially confirmed the death, the U.S. And Canadian governments acted swiftly to warn their citizens. The U.S. State Department issued a “Level 4: Do Not Travel” advisory for six Mexican states: Colima, Guerrero, Jalisco, Michoacán, Sinaloa, and Zacatecas. Canada issued a similar warning, advising citizens to “avoid non-essential travel” to those regions.
The travel alerts specifically cite the potential for retaliatory violence from the CJNG following the reported death of its leader. El Mencho had become Mexico’s most wanted drug lord, and the CJNG has grown to be one of the most powerful and violent criminal organizations in the country. Experts suggest the cartel’s response could include attacks on security forces, rival cartels, and civilian targets.
According to reports, the operation to capture El Mencho involved a coordinated effort between the Mexican military and intelligence agencies. Details surrounding the operation remain scarce, but Axios reported that the U.S. Played a role in providing intelligence support. The extent of U.S. Involvement has not been publicly disclosed by either government.
The death of El Mencho, if confirmed, represents a significant blow to the CJNG. France 24 described El Mencho as Mexico’s most feared cartel kingpin, noting the cartel’s rapid expansion and its increasing sophistication in areas such as weapons procurement and money laundering. Although, analysts caution that the removal of a leader does not necessarily equate to the dismantling of a criminal organization. The CJNG has demonstrated a capacity to adapt and continue operating even after the arrest or death of key figures.
The escalating violence in Mexico has become a major concern for both the U.S. And Canada. The flow of fentanyl and other illicit drugs across the border continues to fuel the opioid crisis in North America. The U.S. Government has repeatedly pressured Mexico to do more to combat drug trafficking and dismantle the cartels. At least 73 people have died in violence connected to cartel activity in the aftermath of the attempt to capture El Mencho, according to AP News reports.
