Rusev Reveals Near-Dismissal Before WWE stardom
in a recent interview wiht CBS Sports, former WWE superstar Rusev detailed a harrowing period early in his career where his position with the company was in serious jeopardy. Arriving in 2010 as a former taxi driver from Bulgaria, Rusev faced a series of debilitating injuries and mounting frustration from WWE officials that nearly derailed his path to becoming a dominant force in the industry.
Just one year after joining WWE, Rusev suffered a torn ACL and meniscus, forcing a lengthy absence from the ring. His return was short-lived, as a subsequent neck injury temporarily limited his arm movement. This led to a direct ultimatum from WWE management: improve rapidly or face termination.
“again, I was pushed against the wall with nowhere else to go,” Rusev recalled. “I remember that vrey vividly… After having that meeting about, ‘You have this much time left here,’ I once again went back and started revisiting my character. What could I do better? If you ask something of me, I’ll deliver.”
Driven by the threat of release, Rusev embarked on a complete overhaul of his approach. He dedicated himself to refining his presentation and becoming a more well-rounded performer. This commitment ultimately propelled him to a breakthrough on the main roster, where he evolved into one of WWE’s most recognizable and impactful stars.
