Venezuelan Woman Receives Decade-Long Sentence for Privateโข WhatsApp Criticism
A Venezuelan courtโ has sentenced Verรณnicaโฃ Andreina Rojas Soto, 44, to 10 years in prisonโ after findingโ her guilty of inciting hatred forโค a โcritical commentโฃ made about the government of nicolรกs Maduro in a private โWhatsApp conversation.
According toโค a report โby El Tequeรฑo newspaper, โฃRojasโ Soto was arrested โthreeโ months prior toโข theโค sentencing for the comment exchangedโ wiht a freind, who was also initially detained but later released. Rojas soto was prosecuted, convicted, and has since been โtransferred to theโข Los Teques Women’s Penitentiary Center.
The severity ofโฃ the sentence has prompted a plea for review โfrom Rojas Soto’sโฃ daughter,โ Karelysโ Rojas, โwho currently resides โin Portugal. “My mother is a woman of the home, dedicatedโ to her husband and my younger sister โwho isโฃ 15. She โขdoes not represent any danger to โฃsociety. he only expressed an opinion inโค private,” Karelys Rojas told El Tequeรฑo.
Familyโข members haveโ alsoโค expressed concern for Rojas Soto’s health, noting she suffers from circulatory โฃproblemsโข that โขcould be exacerbatedโฃ by imprisonment. They describe the 10-year sentence as โdisproportionate to the alleged offense.
The Rojas family โhad been planning a trip to Portugal โto reunite withโ Karelys last July, but โthose plans were halted by Verรณnica โขRojas Soto’sโค arrest. They are nowโฃ appealing to authorities to reconsiderโฃ the sentence.
