New Jersey Devils Defenders Luke Hughes and Šimon Nemec Making Strong Impact in NHL

The New Jersey Devils hit the bull’s eye when they drafted Nic Hischier and Jack Hughes first overall. Now overseas, it is also being decided whether it is not too early to conclude that he also hit the black mark when drafting defenders Luke Hughes and Šimon Nemec.

“At this point, I think you could start to say that the Devils really hit it off with those two picks as well. Both were used as defenders. The Devils needed to shore up the defense after dealing with offense and productivity with other top picks,” stated Alex Potts of All About The Jersey.

Potts recalled that Luke Hughes made his debut in the NHL at the end of last season and this season he definitely established himself fully. However, that was also expected of him, and so he just lives up to expectations.

However, in the case of the German, it was not known for certain whether he would be ready for the best league in the world at this point. However, after being called up to the first team, it only shows that he does not want to return to the AHL and that his drafting can be a huge success for the team.

Potts also pointed to advanced stats from this season for both of them, in which the German overall outperformed Hughes in every aspect – an overall rating percentile of 87 vs. 68, offensive 78 vs. 58 and defensive 81 vs. 76.

“The German has a fantastic defensive impact and quality scoring production despite not being pigeonholed as an attacking defender. He’s solidified his role on the team with his play, and there’s no way Lindy Ruff and co. they could send back to Utica while playing,” noted the overseas author.

Both have quality numbers in positional play and expected goals. At the time of Potts’ analysis, Hughes was 14th among defensemen with at least 100 minutes played with a CF% of 58.25, the German was 28th with a CF% of 55.22. In xGF%, the German was 13th at 57.53 and Hughes was 22nd at 56.52.

“These are unbelievable numbers. Yes, both of them are attracted by being in a strong team, at least analytically, but it is not only the merit of their teammates. They also benefit. To be in the top 30 in positional play among 248 defensemen and to be in the top 25 in expected goals on the same roster is pretty remarkable,” Potts stated.

“Defenders take longer to develop than forwards, but they’re both here and playing so well. This is obviously massive progress for the team now and for the long-term future. They become part of the core and at their age they can be here for a very long time. When you have two such strong players anchoring the defense, a duo that can only get better, it’s extremely promising. So far, it looks like both of these elections are going to be wild successes and we couldn’t ask for more from them.”

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced on Monday that they have signed star forward William Nylander to a new eight-year, $92 million contract.

The contract, whose cap hit of $11.5 million will make Nylander the fifth-highest-paid player, also includes a full no-trade clause without the player’s permission.

In terms of total contract value, it is the highest in the history of a traditional organization. It surpasses John Tavares’ seven-year, $77 million contract. However, Auston Matthews signed a contract with a higher cap-hit – 13.25 million US dollars.

Nylander is in the midst of a career season in which he has already scored 21 goals and added 33 assists in just 37 games. He has a streak of 47 goals and 120 points. Last year, he set personal bests with 40 goals and 87 points.

The twenty-seven-year-old Swede performed evenly even during the elimination fights. In 30 games of the last four playoffs, he recorded 14 goals and 15 assists. In his career, he collected 40 points in 50 games.

Slovak forward Pavol Regenda is getting closer to returning to action. On Friday, he was spotted at the San Diego Gulls practice.

The 24-year-old native of Michaloviec has not played since November 29 due to a lower body injury he suffered in the match against Texas. His condition was assessed on a weekly basis.

The injury came at a bad time for Regenda, as he was approaching a chance in Anaheim’s first team in the NHL with his performances. In the first 17 games, he collected 13 points, but ten of them were goals.

San Diego did not say when Regenda might return to action. The team was scheduled to play Friday and Saturday, but its games in Bakersfield were postponed by the league due to a technical malfunction in the arena. The next scheduled game was Wednesday at Coachella Valley Ice.

SEATTLE – The Seattle Kraken hockey players won the New Year’s NHL Winter Classic game over the Vegas Golden Knights 3:0. The duel in T-Mobile Park was watched by 47,313 spectators, Slovakian striker Tomáš Tatar did not score in the home team’s jersey.

Tomáš Tatar became the third Slovak hockey player, after Marián Hoss and Zden Chára, who participated in the Winter Classic match more than once. At the same time, he reached a respectable NHL record and could become the first player of an overseas professional league who would score more than one point in every outdoor game. However, he did not enter the Canadian scoring.

The first star of the game was goalkeeper Joey Daccord, who made 35 successful saves and recorded his second career shutout. Five goalkeepers had a clean sheet in the matches behind closed doors.

“It was an incredible day and I am grateful to have been able to participate in this event. It was something I will never forget and probably one of the best days of my life.” Daccord told nhl.com.

The home team’s goals were scored by Eeli Tolvanen, Will Borgen and Yanni Gourde. After the match, they celebrated the triumph with the spectators, while the song Lithium by the band Nirvana played over the loudspeakers. “Tonight was a great showcase to show the world how much Seattle is a hockey town. The atmosphere was electrifying and it was a lot of fun.” Gourde said.

Home coach Dave Hakstol also praised the action. “One of the greatest sporting events I have attended.”

Before the game, only 14-year-old Nikhil Bagga, a singer and songwriter from Seattle, played the American national anthem on guitar. Two MH-60S Seahawk helicopters from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island Search and Rescue flew over the stadium.

“Everyone who prepared this event did a great job. We had fun doing it. We got chills. The anthem, the flyover, fantastic,” said Seattle forward Matty Beniers.

NHL summary:

Seattle Kraken – Vegas Golden Knights 3:0 (1:0, 1:0, 1:0)

Goals: 5. Tolvanen (Dunn, Larsson), 23. Borgen (Kartye, Tolvanen), 43. Gourde. Goalkeepers: Daccord – Thompson, shots on goal: 27:35.

Calgary Flames Players Struggling in December: Analysis by Calgary Hockey Now’s Trevor Neufeld

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com December 30, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Calgary Hockey Now’s Trevor Neufeld pointed out four Calgary Flames players who have struggled in December. He didn’t even get past both Slovak attackers.

The overseas author first devoted himself to Dillon Dube and Jonathan Huberdeau. According to him, the other two players do not fall into the same category, because their roles in the team are not so prominent and it is possible that their statistics are also affected by injuries.

As the third, he mentioned Adama Ružička, who was only a healthy substitute in the last match.

“After Jimmy Vesey’s questionable hit from Rangers on October 24, Slovak Adam Ružička struggled dramatically to find consistency. The 24-year-old has one goal and four assists in 23 games since the incident, and only three assists in 11 December matches,” noted Neufeld.

At the end of the overview, Martin Pospíšil figured, although he can get under the opponent’s skin, but lately his offensive productivity has stopped.

“It would be understandable if the former third-round draft pick hadn’t already proven that she was capable of scoring goals. Pospíšil debuted in the NHL in style, scoring three goals and two assists in the first seven games. “Four of those five points gave the Flames the lead or tied the game,” Neufeld said.

“Since then? An amazing goal against Florida on December 18th and a secondary assist on Nazem Kadri’s touchdown against the Golden Knights on December 12th. Two points in his last 16 games is not a good enough pace for him to maintain his position in the top six of the attack for a long time.
