Dengue Cases Surgeโ in Maharashtra, Pune District Reports Highest Numbers
Maharashtra is โขexperiencing a โฃrise in vector-borneโข diseases coincidingโฃ with theโ monsoon season, characterized by rainfall, high humidity, โฃand temperature fluctuations. Data from the stateโ epidemiology department reveals โฃthat โPune districtโ has recorded the highest number of dengue cases in theโ state so far this year, โwith a total of 265 โcases reported between January andโฃ August 21st.
Following Pune, palghar districtโค reported 232 dengue cases, Akola recorded 200, and Amravati reported 132. The state hasโฃ also recorded 26 suspected dengue-related deathsโข during this period.
While the current year’sโข dengue case count is โคlower then the โคsame period last year – 5,962 cases this year compared โฃto 2,895 inโ 2025 – officials anticipate a potential further increase โขas the monsoon season continues.Alongside dengue, Maharashtra has also seen 1,945 cases of chikungunya reported between January โขand August 21st,โค with Pune district โaccounting for 176 of these, makingโค it the second-highest affected district in the state.
Within Puneโ city, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has observed a notable increaseโ in casesโ over theโ past two months. Between july and โขAugust, โขthe city reported 39 โconfirmed dengue cases, 1,113 suspected cases, andโฃ seven confirmedโค chikungunya cases. August alone sawโ 28 โdengue and five โchikungunya cases, โrepresenting theโข highest monthly figures of the year. โ As of August, the PMC has โขcumulatively โreported โฃ51 confirmed dengue cases, 1,366 suspected โฃcases, โand 17 confirmed chikungunya cases.
State health officials attribute the rise in cases โto the favorable breeding conditions created by the ongoing monsoon weather. โDr. Sandeep Sangale, joint โฃdirector of health services and โhead of theโค state’s vector-borne disease control program, emphasized โthe importance of continued preventative measures, includingโฃ containment efforts and public awareness campaigns.
Dr. Aparna Patil,Pune district malaria officer, pointed to urbanization,a large โคmigratory population, and increased โtesting as contributing โฃfactorsโ to the higher โcase numbers in Pune.Over 2,500 samples โhave been tested for dengue andโ chikungunyaโ within โขthe district.
The โฃPMC is actively intensifying fogging โฃand cleanliness drives in โvulnerableโฃ areas, and citizensโ areโ being โขurged to eliminate stagnantโค water, โutilize mosquito nets, and wearโข protective clothing toโข minimize โrisk.
