by Alex Carter - Sports Editor February 19, 2026
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt University’s baseball team defeated Eastern Michigan University 16-2 in a seven-inning game at Hawkins Field on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, completing a two-game midweek series sweep. The Commodores’ victory was highlighted by a combined no-hitter from three freshmen pitchers: Connor Hamilton, Arian Casoliba and Nate Schlote.

Vanderbilt quickly established a dominant lead, scoring nine runs in the first inning. Eastern Michigan managed to score a single run in the second inning when Nick Weaver reached base on a walk and subsequently scored on a wild pitch. But, Vanderbilt responded with four more runs in the second, extending their advantage.

Eastern Michigan’s Carter White entered the game in the second inning and managed to strike out six of the nine batters he faced, providing a bright spot for the Eagles. Despite White’s performance, Vanderbilt continued to build their lead, adding three runs in the sixth inning. Eastern Michigan scored their final run in the seventh inning when Keegan Knupp scored off a hit by pitch from Ty Stecko.

The game concluded in the seventh inning due to the run rule, with the final score standing at 16-2 in favor of Vanderbilt. Wyatt Goodin and Ryker Waite each hit grand slams for the Commodores, contributing to their offensive explosion. Brendan Holcomb also had a strong performance, recording three hits during the game.

With the win, Vanderbilt improved their record to 3-2, while Eastern Michigan fell to 1-4. Eastern Michigan will next face Austin Peay in a three-game series from February 20-22. Vanderbilt’s pitching staff’s combined no-hitter marked their fifth since 2019.

AP Top 25: Ohio State, Indiana set for first Big Ten No. 1 vs. 2 matchup since 2006

AP Top 25: Ohio State, Indiana to ‌Clash⁤ in first Big Ten No. 1 vs. No. 2 Matchup As 2006

COLUMBUS, OH – November 29, 2025 – The College Football Playoff picture is taking‌ shape as the final championship weekend approaches, and the AP Top 25 reflects a tightening race. For the first time as 2006, the Big Ten Championship will feature a No. ⁢1 versus⁣ No. 2 matchup, with Ohio State holding the top spot and ⁤Indiana at No. 2.

This week’s poll sees several ⁤shifts following a turbulent ⁣weekend of ⁣play. Pitt, SMU, and Tennessee have fallen out of the top 25, making way for Arizona (No. 22), navy (No. 23), and Missouri (No. 25). Navy’s ranking marks the program’s ⁤first appearance ‌in the poll this ⁣season, contributing to a ‌strong showing for the American Athletic Conference with North Texas (No.20) and Tulane (No. 21) also ranked. Arizona’s inclusion signifies a successful rebound season under ‍second-year coach Brent Brennan.

Beyond the Big Ten headliner, other key conference championship matchups include No.10 Alabama versus No.⁤ 3 georgia in the SEC, No. 11 BYU against No. 5 texas⁣ Tech in the Big 12, and No. ‌20 North Texas at No. 21 Tulane in the American. ‍The American Championship game is anticipated to have Playoff implications. The ACC will see an unranked Duke face No. 16 ⁤Virginia.

Despite recent close calls, including a narrow escape against LSU, Oklahoma remains in contention, currently viewed as comfortably in the Playoff. However, analysts question whether the Sooners are definitively ⁣superior to teams like BYU, Texas (which defeated Oklahoma), Utah, or Vanderbilt. Oklahoma’s head-to-head win over Alabama currently keeps them ahead of the Tide in rankings.

Indiana faces a daunting challenge against Ohio ⁤State, having lost 30 ⁢consecutive games to the Buckeyes dating back to 1988.⁢ This will be Indiana’s third all-time matchup against a top-five opponent and their second in as many years, following a top-five loss at Ohio State ⁢last season.

An overcrowded College Football Playoff squeeze is coming, plus more Week 14 takeaways

Playoff Chaos Looms as conference Championship Weekend Approaches

College football’s postseason picture is rapidly becoming more complex, with several teams vying for a limited number of College Football Playoff spots. A crowded field and unexpected results⁣ in Week 14 have‌ set the stage for a tense selection Sunday.

Key Takeaways from Week 14:

* nebraska’s late-Season Collapse: ⁣Despite receiving a contract‍ extension in late October to deter a⁤ potential move to Penn State, Nebraska coach Matt Rhule saw his team falter down the stretch. The Huskers, previously 6-2, lost three of thier final four games, culminating in a 40-16 defeat to iowa.‍ The loss of star quarterback Dylan Raiola to a season-ending injury in their November 1st game against USC contributed to the downturn, but the defense conceded 77 points across the last two contests. Rhule’s ‍guaranteed compensation now totals $71 million, up from $49 million with the extension, but ‍his‌ November record fell to 2-10.
* Arizona’s Resurgent Season: No.25 Arizona concluded a surprising regular season with‌ a 23-7 victory over rival Arizona State. Under coach Brent Brennan, the Wildcats improved to 9-3, a significant jump from their 4-8 record the previous year, despite losing key players in the ‌offseason.
* Arizona state’s Disappointment: Arizona ‌State’s season ended with an 8-4 record, ‌a ‌step back from their previous Big‌ 12 title season. The⁤ loss of quarterback Sam Leavitt to injury in October hampered ⁢their efforts, and sixth-year quarterback Jeff Sims struggled against Arizona, committing⁤ five turnovers.
* New Mexico’s Historic Season: New Mexico coach Jason Eck is emerging as a ⁤national coach of the year candidate after leading the Lobos to their first nine-win regular season in 28 years. The team also achieved an undefeated home record, the first since⁣ 1962. A 23-17 double-overtime win against San diego State created a four-way tie for first place in the Mountain West ⁢Conference at 6-2, with Boise State and UNLV also involved. The conference championship game participants will be persistent by computer ratings.
* florida’s Victory, Bowl Drought: Florida defeated ⁢Florida State 40-21, but neither team will participate in a bowl ‍game for the first time since 1978.

Title: College Football Playoff Picture Solidifies After Week 14 Upsets

College football Playoff Debate Intensifies as Committee Rankings Loom

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The College Football Playoff committee faces a critical decision this week as it prepares to release its penultimate rankings, with the debate between Notre Dame and Miami perhaps reaching a head. Both teams finished strong, but a head-to-head victory for the Hurricanes over the Fighting Irish on Labor Day weekend could prove decisive, according to Miami coach Mario Cristobal.”The best part of football is you get to settle it on the field, where head-to-head is always the No. 1 criteria,” Cristobal told ESPN after Miami’s win over Pitt.

Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman countered, asserting his team’s strength relative to the field: “It’s hard for me to believe that there are 12 better teams than Notre Dame as we consider who should be in the Playoff.”

A comparative analysis of common opponents reveals a compelling contrast. Notre Dame and Miami both faced NC State, Syracuse, Stanford, and pitt. The Irish outscored these opponents by a combined 192-49, highlighted by a dominant 70-7 victory over Syracuse. Miami’s combined score against the same four teams was 160-31.

As of Sunday morning, projections by The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel indicate Notre Dame has a 95 percent chance of making the Playoff, while Miami’s chances are estimated at just 1 percent. The committee’s rankings, released Tuesday, may effectively settle the debate as neither team has a game remaining.

ACC Championship Game Presents Unexpected Matchup

The ACC Championship Game will feature an unexpected rematch between No. 18 virginia (10-2) and Duke (7-5). Cal’s upset victory over SMU dashed the Mustangs’ championship hopes and set up the second meeting between the Cavaliers and blue Devils, whom Virginia defeated 34-17 earlier this season. Duke secured its spot despite a 0-2 record against the top six teams in the ACC standings, benefiting from conference tiebreaker rules based on opponents’ winning percentages.

Group of 5 Teams Could Make History

Duke’s unlikely championship appearance opens a potential path for James Madison (11-1) to become the committee’s fifth-highest-ranked conference champion, should they win the Sun Belt Championship against Troy. this scenario would result in two Group of 5 teams reaching the Playoff, alongside the winner of the American Championship Game between Tulane (10-2) and North Texas (11-1). Mandel’s projections currently give JMU a 39 percent chance of making the Playoff, compared to Duke’s 7 percent.
