Hungarian authorities are investigating former Nagykőrös mayor Szabolcs Czira over alleged misuse of an official vehicle, according to a statement released by the Pest County Police Headquarters. The investigation centers on the sale of a Skoda Superb used by Czira during his tenure, and has resulted in the transfer of case files to the relevant prosecutor’s office with a recommendation for indictment.
The probe was initiated after concerns arose regarding the suspiciously low price at which Czira sold the official vehicle. Reports surfaced in February 2025, leading to the vehicle being impounded, according to sources. An anonymous tipster alerted media to the situation, noting that after the Nagykőrös municipality sold the Skoda to a dealership at a significantly reduced price, Czira was observed driving a similar, but newly registered, Skoda Superb.
The vehicle in question, a Skoda Superb, was valued at 11.8 million forints in 2020. Yet, after four and a half years, the municipality assessed its value at just one million forints. A vehicle expert consulted by Telex, a Hungarian news outlet, estimated that a Superb in comparable condition, with approximately 80,000 kilometers on the odometer, would still be worth around 10 million forints.
Further complicating the matter, the new administration in Nagykőrös purchased another Skoda for 18 million forints at the complete of 2025, after having sold Czira’s former vehicle for 980,000 forints. The new vehicle was purchased from Brill Kft., the same dealership that sold the original Skoda to the municipality and subsequently repurchased it at the reduced price.

As of today, the Pest Vármegyei Rendőr-főkapitányság has not commented on the status of the prosecutor’s review of the case files.
