US Commerce Secretary โฃUrges โฃIndia to Lower Tariffs, Cites Corn Import Disparity
Washington โD.C. โ- Septemberโ 14,2025 – US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnickโ has sharply criticized India’s trade practices, specifically callingโฃ on New Delhi to reduce tariffs, particularly on American โcorn,to maintain a healthy trade relationship with the United States.
Lutnick questioned India’s reluctance to import US corn, stating, “India brags that they have 1.4 billion people. Whyโ won’t 1.4 billion peopleโข buy one bushel of US corn? Doesn’t that rub you โtheโข wrong way that they sell everything to us, โand they won’t buy our corn. โขThey put tariffs on everything.”
He characterized the current trade dynamic โas “oneโ way,” โasserting that India benefits significantly from access to the โขUS market while simultaneouslyโค restricting American exports.Lutnick reiteratedโ the US โคposition, โคstating, “The presidentโ says, ‘fair โฃand reciprocal โคtrade’.”
The Secretary’s remarks came during a recent interview discussing USโ trade relations with key โฃallies including India,โ Canada, and Brazil. He emphasized President Donald Trump’s โinsistence on a reciprocal trade approach, urging India toโฃ “bring down your tariffs, treat us the wayโ we treat โyou.”
Lutnick โindicated the US aims to addressโค what he described โas “years of wrong” through tariffsโข on Indian โgoods. the Trump administration hasโ alreadyโ imposed โtariffs of up โขto 50% on certain indian โฃproducts, including a 25% levy on India’s purchases of Russian oil – among the highest tariffs levied on any nation.โ Heโ warned, “That’s the president’s model, and you either accept it or you’reโ going toโ have a tough time doing business with theโข world’s greatest consumer.”
Indiaโ has officially โฃresponded to the US actions, labeling themโค “unfair, unjustified and โฃunreasonable.”โค New Delhi โhasโ defended its continued purchase of Russian crude oil, citing national interest and market dynamics.
Lutnick suggested that a resolution to the trade dispute, and potentialโ progress on a tradeโ agreement, could be contingent on โฃIndia curtailing its oil imports from Russia. Speaking to CNBC, he stated, “Well,โ we’reโ going to sort out India,”โฃ signaling that addressing energy and tariff issues are crucial for advancing negotiations.
