New Delhi: India has temporarily suspended postalโ services to the United States, effective immediately, in response to recently imposed tariffs on Indian goods. The โฃdecision impacts the dispatch of all articles โขintended for delivery โwithin the US.
The Department of Posts announced the suspension, citing difficulties in ensuring โขtimely and reliable delivery given the currentโฃ trade environment. The move follows Presidentโ Donald trumps imposition โขofโฃ a 50% tariff on aโฃ range of Indian goods.
Further exacerbating the situation, the US has alsoโ levied an additional 25%โ penalty on Indian entities purchasing โฃRussian โoil. This dual-pronged tariff structure prompted the Indian government’s response.
The Department of Posts โขstated it is “closely monitoringโ the evolvingโค situationโ in coordination with all stakeholders, and every effort is being made to โnormaliseโ servicesโข at the โฃearliest possible chance.”
Customers who have already booked articles that cannot โคbe dispatched to the USAโค due โto โคthese circumstances may seek a refund of postage,” the releaseโ said.
The suspension ofโ postal โservicesโ comes against theโค backdrop โคof escalatingโ trade tensions between India and theโ US. The tariffs represent a significant โescalation in โa โlong-running dispute over trade imbalances โคand economic policies.
India has strongly criticized theโฃ US decision, labeling it as “unfair, unjustifiedโฃ and unreasonable” and โasserting it will “take โall actions” necessary to protect โขnational interests.
