He believes that a coordinated effort to impose sanctions and tariffs on countries purchasing Russian oil could cripple the Russian economy and force President Putin to the negotiating table.US President Donald Trump has taken a particularly assertive stance, threatening retaliatory measures against nations continuing to buy Russian hydrocarbons. He has already implemented significant customs surcharges on India for this practise, and expressed his dissatisfaction with oil purchases by EU countries. Trump, when questioned about the attack, stated, “I am not happy. I am not happy with the situation as a whole,” and confirmed he is prepared to launch a new phase of sanctions against Russia.
Zelensky reported on Thursday that Trump is “very unhappy” with the continued purchases of Russian oil by European nations. Bessent reiterated on Sunday that a unified US-EU approach to sanctions, including customs duties on Russian oil buyers, is key to achieving a breakthrough in negotiations.
