Mercury’s Shrinkage: New Research Shows Heat from Core Disappearing Through Surface Cracks

The smallest planet in our solar system, Mercury, continues to shrink. Heat from the planet’s core disappears through new cracks in the surface, new research shows.

The results of the new research were published in the scientific journal earlier this month Nature Geoscience. It was already known that Mercury has been shrinking and cooling for thousands of years. It creates gigantic steep slopes on the planet, because the rocky crust buckles due to internal shrinkage.

New cracks are still forming in the slopes, the research shows. These provide evidence that the slopes have moved over the past 300 million years.

“Our team found unequivocal signs that many slopes continue to move recently, in a geological perspective, even though they were formed billions of years ago,” geologist David Rothery of Britain’s Open University said in an article. “Compare it to the wrinkles on an apple as it ages, although this happens due to dehydration. Mercury shrinks because it cools down.”

The process appears to be the same as that of the moon, where measuring instruments recorded tremors due to shrinkage. There are no instruments on Mercury, but in 2025 the European space mission BepiColombo should enter orbit around the planet. This rocket was launched in October 2018 and is on its way to Mercury. The spacecraft will explore the surface of the planet.

As the smallest of the eight planets in our solar system, Mercury is barely larger than our moon. The planet is closest to the sun, with a distance ranging from 46 to 70 million kilometers.

Improvement: An earlier version of this post said “trillions of years.” That is incorrect, because it concerns billions of years. We have edited the message.

Four New Crew Members Arrive at International Space Station: Updates on ISS, Space Travel, SpaceX, and More

Four new crew members have arrived at the International Space Station, NASA reports on X (formerly Twitter). They have been staying there for about six months now to conduct more than 200 experiments in preparation for other space missions.

The astronauts left on Saturday morning (Dutch time) with a rocket from space company SpaceX. The American Jasmin Moghbeli, the Dane Andreas Mogensen, the Japanese Satoshi Furukawa and the Russian Konstantin Borisov have now arrived at the space station at about 400 kilometers above the earth.

There were already three Americans, three Russians and an astronaut from the United Arab Emirates on the ISS. They will return to Earth next month. Then two Russians and an American will also come to the ISS to replace them.

Black Holes Can Move Faster Than Previously Thought: Groundbreaking Discovery by Researchers at Rochester Institute of Technology

Black holes can move much faster than previously thought. They can reach speeds of about 28,500 kilometers per second. That’s about a tenth of the speed of light.

Researchers at the Rochester Institute of Technology published their calculations in a article of the scientific society American Physical Society. According to the scientists, 10 percent of the speed of light is the maximum speed at which black holes can travel.

Contrary to popular belief, black holes are not always located at the same point in space. Like the Earth and other planets, they are constantly moving on a journey through the universe. The fastest speeds are achieved when black holes collide and merge.

As soon as they merge, the new black hole will shoot in a certain direction at full speed. With a speed of 28,500 kilometers per second, a black hole would take about thirteen seconds to travel from the earth to the moon. It was previously estimated that black holes can travel at a maximum speed of 5,000 kilometers per second.

Incidentally, black holes rotate much faster around their center of gravity. This happens at a speed of more than 90 percent of the speed of light. This is because the center of a black hole is very heavy, but also very small.

The researchers speak of a groundbreaking discovery, but emphasize that more research and calculations are needed. The first picture of a black hole was taken in 2019, but we still have no idea what black holes look like exactly. Most images of black holes are a simulation or what is known as an artist’s impression.

Mars’ Increasing Rotation Speed: NASA’s Discovery and Unexplained Phenomenon

Mars rotates faster and faster on its axis. As a result, the days on the red planet are getting a little shorter. NASA was able to measure this thanks to information from the Mars lander InSight. But the space agency cannot yet explain why.

InSight landed on Mars in November 2018. The spacecraft sent information about Mars back to Earth until late last year. In December, InSight sent its last photo, after which the vehicle shut down.

Thanks to the information that InSight sent, NASA calculate that the days on Mars get shorter every year by a fraction of a millisecond. A millisecond is one thousandth of a second. A day on Mars is about forty minutes longer than a day on Earth. This is because the Earth rotates a little faster on its axis.

The acceleration of Mars is so small that only the most accurate machines could detect it. “It took us a long time to have enough information to notice those differences,” says lead researcher Sebastien Le Maistre.

InSight team leader Bruce Banerdt calls it “really cool” that NASA has managed to measure the accelerated rotation of Mars. “Results like these make the decades of work totally worth it.”

Faster rotation not yet explained

The scientists don’t yet have an explanation for why Mars is spinning faster. It may have to do with the molten metal core of the planet. It “sloshes” back and forth, causing the planet to wobble, as it were. That in turn can affect the speed at which Mars rotates.

Unlike Mars, Earth appears to rotate more slowly on its axis. This is because the moon ‘pulls’ at our oceans, shifting the mass of our planet. Mars has no oceans that can “slow down” the planet.

The World’s Largest Commercial Communications Satellite Launched by SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy Rocket

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com July 29, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The world’s largest commercial communications satellite was launched into space on Friday. A Falcon Heavy missile was deployed to accomplish this. That is the most powerful rocket from Elon Musk’s space company SpaceX.

The Falcon Heavy lifted off from the launch pad at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 11:04 p.m. local time. On board was the heavy Jupiter 3 satellite. It is owned by the American company EchoStar, a global provider of satellite communications.

The Jupiter 3 weighs more than 9 tons, is the size of a bus and, according to the US website Spaceflightnow the heaviest commercial communications satellite ever launched.

The satellite must enter a geostationary orbit around the Earth, writes Spaceflightnow. This means that the satellite appears to be stationary above the earth’s surface.

The benefit of this is that EchoStar reaches more people with fewer satellites, says vice president of corporate communications Sharyn Nerenberg.

The components of the Falcon Heavy rocket, such as the side boosters, landed safely on the designated landing zones after launch. It was SpaceX’s 250th successful launch, the company reports.
