Title: Treasury Reclassification Threatens Tax Credits for Immigrants

by Priya Shah – Business Editor November 21, 2025
written by Priya Shah – Business Editor

WASHINGTON – A new ‍Trump governance regulation set to take effect in ⁤tax‌ year 2026 is drawing criticism for potentially denying tax credits to immigrant families, even those authorized to work in the United States. ⁢The rule stems from‍ a⁣ Justice Department reinterpretation of existing law, allowing the Treasury Department to enforce ⁣restrictions on tax⁢ benefits ⁢for individuals without legal status.

Critics ‍argue the change targets immigrants and complicates ⁣the tax process for those legally working and paying taxes. According to the Institute ⁢on‌ Taxation and ‍economic ⁣Policy, ⁤individuals already lacking work authorization are ineligible for these refundable tax⁣ credits, meaning the regulation‌ will primarily impact those with authorization.

“It’s⁢ a terrible and unfair idea to deny⁢ tax credits to people who have paid‌ taxes and are⁣ eligible for them as ⁤of their ‌immigration status,” said Daniel Costa, director of Immigration Law and Policy ⁢Research ‌at the Economic Policy Institute.”Implementing this will require determining who has status and who doesn’t, which is⁤ another way that the Trump administration will expand its deportation dragnet.”

Treasury Secretary‍ Scott Bessent stated the regulation is intended to “enforce the law and prevent illegal⁢ aliens from claiming tax benefits intended for American citizens.”

Though, experts like‌ Carl⁤ Davis, research director of the Institute on Taxation and ⁣Economic Policy, believe the administration ⁤is deliberately creating obstacles for taxpaying immigrants. NYU Tax Law⁤ Center‌ Policy Director Brandon DeBot⁣ argued the Treasury’s reinterpretation “overrides such⁢ clear provisions of ‍the tax code,” and that Congressional action would‍ be required to enact such a change.Davis added ⁣that the move likely bypassed Congress ‍due to a lack of broad public support, especially for targeting Dreamers and DACA recipients.

Undocumented immigrants contributed‌ $100‍ billion ⁢in federal, state, and local taxes in 2022,and contribute billions to⁣ federal payroll‌ taxes despite being ineligible for Social Security retirement ⁢benefits ⁢or Medicare.

Title: Ukraine Drone Attack Kills Dozens, Zelenskyy Seeks Diplomacy

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor November 20, 2025

Russian Strikes Kill At Least 25 in ⁣Ukraine, Including Children

Ternopil,‍ Ukraine – A Russian attack‍ on Wednesday killed at least 25 people in the⁢ western Ukrainian city of Ternopil, officials reported, as Moscow intensified its strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure‌ adn civilian areas. The attack, which involved drones and missiles, also injured nearly 50⁣ people across multiple regions.

The strikes⁢ come as diplomatic efforts to find a path to peace remain stalled, though a U.S. official indicated that the State Department’s ‌former special envoy for Ukraine, Kurt Volker, is scheduled to‌ meet with ‍Ukrainian President Volodymyr ⁢Zelenskyy this week to explore potential avenues for renewed peace ⁤talks. Ukrainian officials have confirmed Volker’s visit to Kyiv but have⁢ not commented on discussions regarding negotiations‍ with Russia.

Russia’s Defense ministry ⁣stated the ⁣attacks targeted Ukrainian energy facilities and military-industrial targets, including drone depots, in response to Ukrainian ⁢strikes on Russian territory.

in Kharkiv, ⁢Ukraine’s second-largest city, Russian drones injured⁤ 46 people, including⁣ two‍ girls, according to⁣ oleh syniehubov,⁣ head of ‍the regional military governance. The drones struck residential buildings, an ambulance station, a‌ school, and other civilian ‍infrastructure.

Neighboring Romania and Poland were also impacted by the escalating conflict. Romania scrambled two Eurofighter ‌Typhoon jets and two F-16s after a drone entered‌ its⁢ airspace during the Russian attacks. Poland ‌deployed ⁢its military aircraft and temporarily closed airports in ⁢Rzeszów and⁢ Lublin as ‌a precautionary measure.

Simultaneously occurring,‍ Russia claimed to have intercepted‍ four American-supplied ATACMS missiles fired⁣ by Ukraine ‌at the city of Voronezh on Tuesday. Debris from⁤ the intercepted missiles reportedly damaged‌ a private house, an orphanage, and a gerontology center,⁢ though no casualties were reported. Ukraine’s General Staff confirmed ‌firing ATACMS missiles at Russia⁣ but provided no⁢ further details.

The conflict, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, has resulted in a devastating humanitarian crisis and widespread destruction across Ukraine. Western nations have provided important military and financial aid to Ukraine, but a resolution to the conflict remains elusive.

Title: Federal Immigration Crackdown Spreads Fear in North Carolina Suburbs

by Emma Walker – News Editor November 18, 2025
written by Emma Walker – News Editor

Federal Immigration Enforcement ‍Expands to Raleigh, North carolina

Raleigh, N.C. – ⁤Federal immigration enforcement is expanding in North Carolina, with Immigration and⁣ enforcement (ICE) agents deploying to Raleigh as part of a nationwide crackdown on jurisdictions perceived as uncooperative with immigration ⁣authorities. The move comes ⁢amid heightened scrutiny of “sanctuary policies” and follows similar deployments to Mecklenburg County ‍earlier this year, signaling a ⁣broader federal‌ effort to increase immigration enforcement within the state.

North Carolina has become a focal point in national ⁢debates surrounding crime and immigration, issues central to the White House agenda. While most North Carolina county jails⁤ historically honored federal “detainers” – requests to‍ hold arrested immigrants for potential ICE ⁢custody – policies in cities like⁣ Raleigh and Charlotte limited local police assistance with immigration enforcement. The‍ Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has stated its focus on the state stems from these policies, ⁢claiming approximately 1,400 detainers across North Carolina have gone unfulfilled‌ as October 2020, potentially ‍endangering public safety.

Recent state law changes⁤ have compelled Mecklenburg County and ‍Wake County⁢ jails to honor detainer requests, reversing previous ⁣policies.‌ however, DHS maintains the need for increased federal presence to ensure compliance. The deployment to Raleigh is viewed by North⁢ Carolina Republican⁤ Party spokesperson Matt Mercer as a necessary step, stating in a text message that it demonstrates the ‌Trump governance is “finally taking seriously” failures by “radical Democrats.”

The ‌increased federal attention to North Carolina follows a summer marked by high-profile incidents, including the fatal stabbing of ‌Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska on a Charlotte light-rail train. Though the ⁤suspect was a U.S. citizen with a history of arrests, the Trump administration highlighted his prior record.

North Carolina’s political landscape presents a complex backdrop for ⁢these enforcement efforts. Governor Josh Stein has sought bipartisan collaboration with the Republican-controlled state Legislature, while the state’s two U.S. senators are both ⁣Republican. Donald Trump has won the state in ⁤the last three presidential ⁣elections.

Title: Zelenskyy Travels to Turkey in New Peace Push Amidst Sanctions and Fighting

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor November 18, 2025

Zelenskyy in turkey for High-stakes⁢ Talks to End Russia’s War

ANKARA, Turkey – Ukrainian ⁢President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Istanbul, Turkey, ‌on Friday for meetings ⁣with Turkish President Recep⁢ Tayyip Erdoğan aimed at securing a just and lasting peace to end Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine. The visit comes as fighting continues in eastern Ukraine, including recent drone strikes ‍in Dnipro that injured two people and damaged six residential buildings, as well as the offices‍ of‌ Ukraine’s public broadcaster Suspilne.

Zelenskyy’s trip underscores Turkey’s role as a key mediator in the conflict, having previously hosted peace talks between Ukrainian and Russian delegations.⁤ While a ‍breakthrough is not guaranteed, the discussions are critical as Ukraine seeks international support to end the war on terms that respect its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The conflict, now entering its third year, has displaced millions ⁢and caused widespread destruction, with significant implications for global security‌ and ‌energy markets.

Turkey ‌has‌ maintained a delicate balancing act throughout ⁤the war, providing Ukraine with military aid while also seeking to maintain economic ties with Russia.President Erdoğan has repeatedly offered to host further negotiations and has emphasized the importance of a ceasefire.

The visit also comes amid ⁤growing domestic political pressure for Zelenskyy, who is facing scrutiny over a $100 million embezzlement and kickback scandal involving top officials⁢ and Ukraine’s state nuclear power company. The ‍scandal led to the resignations of two members of‌ his cabinet last week. Former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has demanded the ‌dismissal of the entire Ukrainian government, ‌staging a protest in⁢ the Verkhovna rada, ukraine’s Parliament, halting the parliamentary session. Zelenskyy has pledged to address corruption, but has faced previous graft scandals that have‍ fueled public outrage. He is scheduled to meet with senior officials and parliamentary leaders on Thursday to discuss the matter.

Trump Welcomes Crown Prince Amid Khashoggi Controversy and New Deals

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor November 18, 2025

Saudi Crown ‌Prince Mohammed ‍bin Salman‍ Returns too Washington for white House Meeting

WASHINGTON (AP) – ⁣Saudi‍ Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman made ⁣a return⁤ visit to Washington today, receiving a welcome‌ at teh White House as he seeks to solidify ties with the⁢ U.S. and navigate complex geopolitical‌ challenges.⁤ The visit marks a‌ notable step in reestablishing Prince Mohammed’s position on the global stage following ⁤a period of relative isolation after the 2018 killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Discussions between Prince Mohammed and President Trump are expected to center ⁣on maintaining‍ the fragile ceasefire in Gaza, shared concerns regarding‍ Iran‘s⁢ regional influence, and the ‌ongoing⁢ civil war in Sudan. A key objective for the Saudi ‌delegation is securing formal ⁣assurances ⁢from the ‌U.S. regarding the scope of military protection for the kingdom, ⁣though⁣ any such‍ commitments would require Congressional ratification.

Beyond security concerns, Saudi Arabia is‍ poised to announce a multi-billion ‌dollar investment in U.S. artificial intelligence ⁣infrastructure and outline new cooperation‌ in the civil nuclear energy sector, according to a senior Trump governance‍ official. This investment reflects ‌Prince Mohammed’s‍ broader ambition to⁢ diversify the Saudi economy away from oil, focusing on⁢ sectors ‌like mining, technology, and tourism.

The ⁢visit ⁢occurs amidst calls from 11 human rights⁤ groups urging the Trump administration to leverage its ⁣relationship with Saudi Arabia to press for improvements in human rights and press⁤ freedom.activists cite continued repression of dissent within the kingdom, including the arrest of human rights defenders, journalists, and political dissidents, as well as a documented surge in executions.

“Saudi Arabia’s crown prince is⁤ trying to rebrand himself as a global statesman, but ⁢the reality at home is mass ⁣repression, record numbers⁤ of executions, and zero tolerance ‍for dissent,”‍ said Sarah Yager, Washington director ⁢at Human Rights ⁤Watch, in a statement. “U.S.⁢ officials‌ should⁣ be pressing for ‍change, not posing for photos.”

The U.S. ‍is also presenting ⁤a plan for Gaza that ‌authorizes an international⁣ stabilization force and envisions a possible future path to ⁤an ‍independant Palestinian state.

Title: Charlotte Targeted in Unexpected Immigration Crackdown, Sparking Debate

by Emma Walker – News Editor November 18, 2025
written by Emma Walker – News Editor

Charlotte Faces Increased ICE presence Amidst Ongoing Debate Over Immigration Enforcement

Charlotte, N.C.- Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has considerably increased its activity in Charlotte, North ⁤Carolina, in recent weeks, escalating a⁤ long-running dispute over immigration enforcement policies between state and local officials. The increased presence⁣ follows years of tension and legislative action aimed at compelling⁣ local jails to cooperate with⁤ federal immigration detainers.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has identified‍ North Carolina as a focus state due to its policies regarding sanctuary‌ jurisdictions. While DHS reports approximately‌ 1,400⁤ detainers across the⁤ state have ⁢gone unhonored since October 2020, North Carolina county jails have historically honored “detainers”-requests from federal officials to hold arrested immigrants for potential ICE custody. However, some localities, including Charlotte, have maintained policies limiting assistance with immigration enforcement.⁢

Mecklenburg County Jail previously declined to honor ICE detainers for several years, untill a‍ state⁢ law ‌enacted in late 2023 effectively mandated compliance.Mecklenburg Sheriff ⁣Garry McFadden actively resisted previous attempts by the Republican-controlled state legislature to force his office and other urban county sheriffs to accept ICE ‌detainers.

Despite stating his office is now complying with the law, ⁣McFadden continued to publicly dispute‌ ICE procedures earlier this year, leading to a further tightening of regulations thru a new state law. Governor roy Cooper vetoed this measure, but the veto was overridden by the legislature.

Republican House Speaker Destin Hall stated on X (formerly Twitter) Monday that ICE’s ⁢increased presence is a direct result of McFadden’s past policies: “They’re stepping in to clean ‌up his mess and restore safety to the city.”

McFadden recently reported a “productive meeting” with an ICE representative, emphasizing his desire for ‍coordinated enforcement. “I made it clear⁢ that ‍I do not want to stop ICE‍ from doing their job, but I do want them to do it safely, responsibly, and with proper‌ coordination by notifying our agency ahead of ‌time,” ‌McFadden said in a statement.

The situation remains politically charged. State GOP Chairman Jason Simmons asserted Monday, “Democrats⁤ at all levels are choosing to protect criminal illegals over North carolina citizens.”

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles, who won a fifth term‍ earlier⁤ this month with a 45-percentage-point victory, has navigated these debates ‍amidst broader concerns about rising crime in the city. Democrats are poised to maintain a strong majority on the city ⁢council, holding 10 of 11‌ seats.
