India Backs Brazil’s COP30 Presidency, Highlights โ’Just Transition’ Win
Belรฉm, Brazil -โ November 23,โข 2025 – India has expressed strong support for Brazil’sโข leadership โคof COP30, the annual united Nations โClimate change Conference which โconcluded in Belรฉm on November 21st, and voiced satisfaction with key outcomes from the summit, including theโ establishment โคof a “Just Transition Mechanism.”
According to an โฃofficial statement released following โขthe conclusion of the conference, indiaโ “sincerely hopes in the spirit of international cooperation thatโฃ promises made 33 years ago in โRio would now โbeโฃ fulfilled due to the first steps parties have taken in โขBelem.”
The Just โTransition Mechanismโฃ was hailed as a “notable milestone” expectedโ to help โฃoperationalize equity and climateโค justice at โbothโ global and national levels.
India โalso welcomed theโค opportunity to discussโ “Unilateral Trade-Restrictive Climate Measures,” noting theseโ measures are increasingly impactingโ developing countries and violate the principles of โคequity and “CBDR-RC” (Common But Differentiated โขResponsibilities andโ Respective Capabilities)โ enshrined in the UNโฃ Frameworkโ Conventionโ on Climate Change and โคthe Paris Agreement. New Delhi stressed โขthe needโฃ to address these issues openly, stating that the COP30 negotiations marked a “beginning here โฃto reverse โขthis trend.”
The statementโฃ reiterated India’s commitmentโ toโ climate action โฃbased on scientific โevidence andโ equitableโฃ principles,โข emphasizingโ that โฃthe โฃburden of โขclimate change mitigation should not fall disproportionately on โthose least responsibleโข for the problem. โIt also โhighlighted โthe need for increased global supportโค for vulnerable โpopulations, especially in โthe Global South, to protect themselves from the โescalating impacts of climate โchange.
India reaffirmed its commitment toโข aโ rules-based, equitable globalโ orderโ that respectsโข national sovereignty andโ pledged โto continue working โwithโข all parties to ensure โclimate ambition is inclusive, just, and equitable.
The COP30 summit, which brought โฃtogether negotiatorsโ from 194โข countries, was extendedโ into Saturday โคdue to disruptions caused by a fire at the mainโข venue on November 20th, which resulted in non-burn injuries to โ27 people. โฃ
India โconcluded its statement by expressing gratitude to Brazil andโ theโฃ internationalโ community and calling for collective effort โto โขbuildโค a future โdefined byโ fairness, solidarity, and shared prosperity.
