Drake and Worldwide Music Group too Enter Mediation in Contentious Legal Battle
NEW YORKโฃ – Drake โขand Universal Music โGroup (UMG) are set to engage in mediation on December 19 at 10:30 โa.m. ET, as the legal โขdispute between the artist andโ his label continues to โescalate. The session, overseen by Chief โคCircuit Mediator Kathleen M. Scanlon via phone, comes after Drake appealed a previousโ dismissal of his defamation lawsuit filed earlierโข this year.
The conflict stems โฃfrom allegations at the center of DrakeSโข January lawsuit, which a โขjudgeโ described as a “hefty” accusation. However, Judge Jeannette Vargas ultimately dismissedโ the claim, stating, โ”although the accusation is โserious,โ the natureโข of a rapโ battle-oftenโ characterized by โincendiaryโ remarks-means that audiences do not โคexpect to receive factual assertions.”
UMG has publicly welcomed the dismissal, characterizing Drake’sโ initialโ filingโ as an unwarranted challenge to creative expression. the company expressed it’s desire to โฃresolve the dispute and refocus on Drake’s music and future projects. โ
The outcome of the โคDecember 19โข mediation is anticipated to substantially โimpact โฃthe future โขof the conflict. A favorable resultโฃ for UMG โคcould increase pressure on Drake, whoโค remains steadfastโ in hisโฃ public and legal defense. Industry observers believe the resolution, or lack thereof, will โhave repercussions extending beyond โขtheโ courtroom.
