Russia’s Wagner Group Refuses Contract with Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, says Founder Prigozhin

MOSCOW – The most powerful mercenary group Russia Wagner, said on Sunday (11/6/2023), that Wagner will not sign any contract with the Minister of Defense of Russia, Sergei Shoigu.

As Reuters reports, Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of the Wagner group, has repeatedly attacked Russian military top brass for what he views as treason, for failing to fight properly in Ukraine.

Neither Shoigu nor Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov commented publicly about the insult from Prigozhin. In May, Wagner’s troops captured the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut after fighting that killed tens of thousands of people.

The defense ministry said on Saturday Shoigu had ordered all “volunteer detachments” to sign contracts with his ministry by the end of the month, a move it said would increase the effectiveness of the Russian army.

Although the ministry did not mention Wagner in its public statements, Russian media reported that it was Shoigu’s attempt to get the mercenaries into submission.

“Wagner will not sign any contract with Shoigu,” Prigozhin said in response to a request for comment on the matter. “That order does not apply to Wagner,” he continued.

The defense ministry did not respond to requests for comment from Reuters. Prigozhin and his Wagner mercenaries rose to prominence for what the United States says was destabilizing countries across Africa, plundering natural resources, and even meddling in the 2016 US presidential election.

Prigozhin said Wagner was completely subordinate to Russian interests. However, his highly efficient command structure would be broken by reporting to the Shoigu.

“The Shoigu cannot properly manage military formations,” said Prigozhin. It added that Wagner coordinated his actions in Ukraine with General Sergei Surovikin, who was dubbed “General Armageddon” by the Russian media.

KHARKOV – Russia may be able to prevent repeated Ukrainian attacks on the Belgorod Region by pushing deeper into Ukraine and taking control of the Kharkov Region, which is just across the border.

This suggestion was expressed by the local governor Vyacheslav Gladkov on Monday (29/5/2023).

Speaking to the Russia 24 TV channel, when asked what could be done to improve security in areas bordering Ukraine, Gladkov replied one possibility was, “Attach Kharkov to the Belgorod Region. This is the best way to solve the shooting problem in the Belgorod Region.”

Meanwhile, Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said he could not comment on the idea.

He explained the matter “relates to the category of questions related to special military operations” in Ukraine.

According to Gladkov, on Sunday alone Ukrainian troops fired more than 300 projectiles into several districts of the Belgorod Region.

Additionally, Gennady Bondarev, head of the Grayvoron district, claimed the Ukrainian military operation had resulted in nearly 400 houses being damaged between May 22 and 27.

The district was the target of a deadly Ukrainian cross-border attack earlier this month that left one civilian dead and several others injured.

KIEV – President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged that Russia carried out one of the most massive drone strikes in Ukraine to date.

Zelensky’s confession came on Sunday night (28/5/2023), amid media reports of explosions across the country. According to the RT report, the Russian Ministry of Defense (Kemhan) has yet to comment on the matter.

In a statement on Telegram, Zelensky said, “Today, our country experienced one of the largest Russian attacks by 54 Shaheds drones at once.”

The statement referred to the Kamikaze drone (UAV), which the West claims and Kiev was given to Russia by Iran.

Tehran has denied supplying Moscow with drones during the conflict in Ukraine. The Kremlin says it only uses Russian-made weapons in Ukraine.

Ukraine’s president claims almost all of the drones have been shot down. He added, “Unfortunately, there have been several attacks in Zhytomir Region” in the central part of the country.

Earlier, Vitaly Bunechko, the head of the local government, said Russia carried out attacks on infrastructure facilities in the region.

He did not provide further details about the blast, but noted there were no casualties.

MOSCOW – Russia and the West are “in solidarity” to assert the conflict in Ukraine cannot be frozen. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov revealed this in an interview with Russia’s TASS news agency on Wednesday (24/5/2023).

Asked whether Russia was considering postponing the battle, Peskov said Moscow was only considering the option of “completing a special military operation”, meaning securing Russia’s interests and achieving its goals either through the military, or other available means.

The spokesperson noted that it is too early to talk about a peaceful resolution to the Ukrainian conflict, as there are no prerequisites for such an outcome yet.

“It is unlikely that we can talk about real negotiations with any of the representatives of the Kiev authorities at the moment, because (in Ukraine) any negotiations with the Russian Federation are prohibited now,” Peskov said.

Earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said any peace talks regarding the situation in Ukraine cannot aim at freezing the conflict. “Russia must withdraw its troops,” he stressed on the sidelines of the G7 summit on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the United States (US) is reportedly trying to prolong the conflict for years or even decades.

According to news website Politico, US President Joe Biden’s administration has considered freezing the fighting instead of pushing for a Ukrainian victory, with the aim of achieving a situation similar to that between North and South Korea.

“The Korean style shutdown is of course something that has been discussed by experts and analysts inside and outside the government,” a source told the outlet.

MOSCOW – Russian air defense units dropped one Storm Shadow missile and 10 HIMARS rounds over the past few days.

The Russian Ministry of Defense (Kemhan) revealed this on Monday (15/5/2023).

“The air defense system intercepted seven HARM anti-radar missiles, one Storm Shadow long-range cruise missile and ten HIMARS multiple rocket launchers during the day,” the Russian Ministry of Defense said in a statement.

The Russian side informed about the Storm Shadow missile intercept for the first time.

Earlier in the day, the LPR representative office at the Joint Center for the Control and Coordination of issues relating to Ukrainian war crimes (JCCC) said Ukrainian forces had fired three Storm Shadow missiles and 15 HIMARS missiles at the Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR) over the past week.

The Storm Shadow missile is one of the cruise missiles developed by the defense company MBDA (Missile Dynamics Anglo-French). This missile has become the main weapon in several air forces around the world.

Storm Shadow has a very wide range, can reach up to more than 250 kilometers.

This allows these missiles to launch from a safe distance and allows fighter aircraft to evade enemy air defenses.

KIEV – Russia launched a massive wave of attacks on Kiev and the entire region Ukraine , Monday (8/5/2023) morning local time. This wave of attacks sowed devastation in a number of areas of Ukraine.

The wave of attacks was launched as Moscow prepared for the Victory Day parade on Tuesday (9/5/2023). It is an important anniversary for President Vladimir Putin that has raised the morale of the Russian army, such as when Soviet troops defeated Nazi Germany in World War II.

As a result of the wave of attacks, at least five people were injured in Kiev, Ukrainian officials said. Meanwhile Russian missile hits torched a grocery store in the Black Sea city of Odesa and explosions were reported in several other Ukrainian regions.

“Russia is intensifying shelling on Bakhmut in hopes of seizing it by Tuesday,” said the top Ukrainian general in charge of the defense of the besieged city.

Three people were injured in the explosion in the Solomyanskyi district of Kiev and two others were injured when the drone debris fell into the Sviatoshyn district. “Both are west of the center of the capital,” Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on his Telegram message channel.

Meanwhile the military administration of Kiev said that debris from the drone fell on the runway of Zhuliany airport, one of the two passenger airports of the Ukrainian capital. The incident did not start a fire, but emergency services were working on the scene.

It also said that in the Shevchenkivskyi district, downtown Kiev, the debris of the drone appeared to have hit a two-storey building, causing damage. There was no immediate information about potential victims.
