Exclusive: Top Military Leadership of Ukraine Targeted by Elite Russian GRU Group, Says Investigative Journalist

The operation to eliminate the top military leadership of Ukraine was carried out by the group of General of the Russian GRU Andrei Averyanov, assures Hristo Grozev.

Even before the start of the war, the Russian Federation sent several elite groups into Ukraine, which, during the invasion, were supposed to capture the government quarter of Kyiv and the top leadership of Ukraine, including President Vladimir Zelensky.

The head of the influential investigative journalist group Bellingcat, Hristo Grozev, spoke about this in an interview with Mikhail Zygar on YouTube.

“A couple of weeks before the start of the war, they went through Belarus to be close to Kiev. Some of them entered Kiev and were preparing to take the political quarter, people subordinate to Averyanov… There were about 30 of them (people – ed.), this is a very elite group… They sent there the same people who blew up warehouses in the Czech Republic and Bulgaria, who poisoned both the Bulgarian businessman Gebrev and the Skripals“- said Grozev.

He clarified that at the beginning of the war, these Russian killers were very inspired. They were confident that they could easily carry out the “most beautiful” and victorious part of the war: they would capture or kill the leadership of Ukraine. However, the plans of the GRU officers were thwarted and their mood changed radically.

“We monitored the communications of several members of this team. It was both scary and funny: scary because they saw what their goals were, and funny because every day they became less and less jingoistic and began to criticize the leadership for a poorly planned operation. At first they wrote to their wives that they would stay for a week, then for two weeks, and then for a month, six months… They began to doubt the fidelity of their wives. You can write a novel about this, how the team that was supposed to ensure victory for Russia in a week became psychological victims of their own war“- said Grozev.

According to him, part of this group was liquidated during the war, and part managed to escape to the rear.

“They are from Russia planning sabotage operations, managing sabotage raids into Ukraine from Belarus. They no longer have such big goals as before: to kill Zelensky. They completely failed in this regard“, stated the head of Bellingcat.

Earlier, Grozev explained why Prigozhin stopped his march on Moscow.

In addition, Grozev predicts mass murders of Putin’s enemies.

Magdeburg – Hardy Grimme’s property in Kannenstieg can be seen from afar on these dark winter evenings: he and his wife have created their own little world of lights with numerous fairy lights and luminous objects.

There is something to discover in every corner: an artificial Christmas tree more than four meters high, glowing candy canes, a train and – of course – Santa Claus as far as the eye can see.

Some of them are even decorated with FCM and SCM fan items, others sing and dance as you walk past them. But the most impressive thing are probably the many fairy lights that tower over the garden like a starry sky. Hardy Grimme made many of the figures himself, such as glowing candy canes or a seesaw on which two Santa Clauses sit.

Merry Christmas everywhere in Magdeburg

A little more than ten years ago, he became obsessed with the splendor of Christmas lights. “I just think it’s beautiful,” he says. He doesn’t know exactly how many lighting objects he and his wife have in his garden. But there are many – and there is no end in sight yet. He doesn’t buy as much as he did in the past. “It shouldn’t be too overloaded,” explains Grimme. But every now and then, while shopping, he still discovers one or two fairy lights or a figure that he can’t just walk past. He doesn’t worry about the electricity bill. Time switches limit the lighting time to around 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., which saves a lot of energy. As energy prices rose in recent years, he again reduced the amount of time his light objects glowed.

In addition to fairy lights and luminous objects, numerous Santa Clauses are also part of the decoration. Some of them are even fans of FCM and SCM.

So that his garden in Klosterfelde shines in all its splendor just in time for Christmas, the decorative boxes have to be brought out in good time: because the Grimmes need around four to five weeks to hang up all the chains and set up the figures. However, dismantling, usually between Christmas and New Year, would be a little quicker: “We need about a week for it,” says Hardy Grimme. Then stop decorating. He also has a craving for decoration at Easter. But of course it is without light and with fewer objects.

Every year again

Year after year, visitors come by at Christmas time to enjoy the world of lights. Every now and then Grimme even gives short tours of his garden. Parents in particular often come over with children.

Over the years, the Grimme couple have never had enough of their own “little fairytale world,” as they both say. “Many people who decorate their houses have nothing to do with it, but can only see the decorations when they stand outside their house.” Things are different with the Grimmes. All you need to do is look out the window to be enchanted by your own winter lights.

Between January 1 and December 1, 2023, 1,855 cases confirmed and no deaths in 29 counties, including the municipality of Bucharest. Most cases have been reported in County Mures (n=628), Brasov (n=339) and Bucharest (n=213). The vast majority of cases occur in unvaccinated children aged 0 to 9 years (69.7%, n=1,293), including 224 children under one year of age (12%). In total, 102 cases had received one dose and 51 two doses of vaccination. Vaccination status was unknown in 41 cases. The peak of the current outbreak, with around 170 cases, was recorded in week 44, but delays in reporting cannot be excluded.

Reported numbers of measles cases decreased significantly during the pandemic, but the situation appears to be returning to pre-pandemic levels, possibly due to the progressive decline in MMR vaccine coverage year on year and the accumulation of susceptible people . According to the Ministry of Health, vaccination coverage for 2023 with the first dose of MCV at the national level is 78% and the second dose is 62%. Vaccination coverage has been declining over the last decade in Romania.

Given the size of the current outbreak in Romania, historical trends, and vaccination coverage for the first and second doses of MCV below 95%, there is a high risk of continued measles transmission within Romania.

In addition to the direct impact on morbidity, mortality and long-term sequelae in the Romanian population, the current outbreak will lead to a repeated export of cases to other EU/EEA countries, with an increased risk of outbreaks, particularly where coverage vaccination is not optimal. Response efforts continue in Romania and should help ensure that groups of susceptible people are adequately vaccinated. Given the announcement of the epidemic, the Romanian authorities have paved the way for vaccination against measles starting in nine months. This is an important outbreak response measure to protect very young children, who are most at risk of serious complications.
