Shame on West Ham. Souček and Coufal caught a debacle at Crystal Palace

West Ham United footballers with Tomáš Souček and Vladimír Coufal in the starting line-up suffered a 2:5 debacle in the 34th round of the English league in the London derby at Crystal Palace. After Thursday’s elimination from the Europa League by Leverkusen, the “Hammers” fans had to endure another disappointment.

Crystal Palace took points from Liverpool at home a week ago and continued their winning streak in style. West Ham have struggled defensively, not keeping a single clean sheet in 13 league games since the start of January, but haven’t had such a start for a long time. After twenty minutes, he was losing 0:3.

The highlight of the misery was an own goal by Italo Emerson after a misunderstanding with the goalkeeper. The Frenchman Mateta added two more hits, meanwhile Souček was enough to set up a goal for the Jamaican Antonio with a header, and the home team’s own goal eased the loss in the end.

At the end of the first act, Souček received a yellow card for unsportsmanlike behavior and coach Moyes did not let him go in the second half. Coufal stayed on the field until the bitter end. After the second loss in a row, West Ham’s return to cup Europe is very complicated.

On the contrary, after leaving the Europa League, Liverpool developed a taste for the domestic scene. They won 3-1 at Fulham and moved within points of leaders Arsenal. Defending champions Manchester City are a point back but have a game postponed due to Saturday’s cup semi-final. Alexander-Arnold signaled the visitors’ victory with a great free kick, and even though the opponent managed to equalize, the Dutchman Gravenberch and the Portuguese Diogo Jota secured the points for the favorite after switching sides.

After success in Thursday’s penalty draw in the Conference League in Lille, Aston Villa will be the only ones to defend the honor of the cradle of football in Europe. And after today’s 3-1 win over Bournemouth, in fourth place, they can keep thinking about being in the Champions League next season. At the same time, the match was not going well for her.

Solanke scored his 18th league goal from the penalty spot, but Rogers equalized just before the break and Watkins set up two more goals after the change of sides.

Everton beat Nottingham Forest 2-0 to move within four points of their nearest rivals just above the relegation zone. Both teams would have breathed better if they had not lost points due to the violation of financial rules. Nottingham lost four, Everton even eight.

Everton are plagued by low productivity, having scored just six goals in the previous nine rounds.

But after Monday’s 0-6 debacle at Chelsea, he bounced back to claim victory. Senegalese midfielder Gueye opened the score, McNeill added the insurance at the end and the national team goalkeeper Pickford kept the home team with several great saves.

Another goal was not scored even during the set-up, which was extended to seventeen minutes due to treatment of the home team Beta. The Portuguese striker left the pitch on a stretcher and with an oxygen mask after a collision with an opponent.

English Football League – Round 34:

Everton – Nottingham 2:0 (29. Gueye, 76. McNeil), Aston Villa – Bournemouth 3:1 (45.+1 Rogers, 57. Diaby, 78. Bailey – 30. Solanke z pen.), Crystal Palace – West Ham 5:2 (32nd and 64th Mateta, 7th Olise, 16th Eze, 20th own Emerson – 40th Antonio, 89th own Mitchell), Fulham – Liverpool 1:3 (45.+2 Castagne – 32. Alexander-Arnold, 53. Gravenberch, 72. Diogo Jota).

The players of Atalanta Bergamo surprisingly triumphed in the opening match of the quarter-finals of the Europa League on the field of favorite FC Liverpool 3:0 and created an excellent position before the home rematch.

Bayer Leverkusen extended their unbeaten run to 42 games with a dominant performance to beat West Ham 2-0 at home thanks to late goals.

The home “Reds” started at Anfield Road in a changed lineup, and Salah, Szoboszlai, Robertson and Diaz only got on the field in the second half with a score of 0:1. Liverpool had the upper hand and had chances at the start, but Nunez himself missed the goal and Elliott’s shot bounced off the crossbar into the post and out of the goal.

The visitors succeeded in two similar counterattacks on the right side, at the end of which was Scamacca. In the 38th minute, Zappacosta scored for him in the center of the penalty area, and after an hour of play, de Ketelaere made a cross. Salah’s goal in the 80th minute was disallowed for offside, but Pašaličov’s three minutes later was, and Atalanta goes home with a class difference advantage.

In the Italian match, AS Roma won against AC Milan just 1:0. The guests struck in the 17th minute, when Mancini, who was weakly defended, headed in a corner. Over the weekend, the Italian stopper also decided with his head the triumph of AS in the Roman derby with Lazio 1:0. Giroud only hit the crossbar from a few meters in the 87th minute. The Milanese ended a seven-game winning streak in all competitions.

Benfica Lisbon won the home match over Olympique Marseille 2:1 thanks to goals from Silva and di Maria. Aubameyang equalized for the visitors in the 67th minute, but the French team could not equalize despite the pressure at the end.

Leverkusen dominated as a big favorite against the “Hammers”, had 65% possession, won 32:1 on shots, 11:1 on goal, but waited until the very end for goals in front of the home fans. His triumph was arranged in the 83rd minute by Hofmann, who was on the pitch for only six minutes, and in added time by another substitute player, Boniface. Coach Xabi Alonso’s team has not lost in 42 consecutive matches and is the only undefeated team in the top five European competitions this season.

Atalanta made a surprise 2-0 win at Anfield in the 2020 Champions League and added another goal on top today. The visitors had a great chance in the third minute, but Crovat Pasalič only hit the head of the falling goalkeeper Kelleher from close range. The warning did not help and Scamacca, who spent last season in the English league in the services of West Ham, hit the target before the break.

Before the second half, the disgruntled coach Klopp made three changes and the top scorer Salah came to the pitch. But instead of equalizing, Scamacca added the second goal and Pasalič completed the sensation. Liverpool, who comfortably beat Sparta twice in the last round, will have a lot of catching up to do in the return leg.

Milan have won both head-to-head matches with AS Roma in the Italian league this season and have clearly had the upper hand lately. The Romans last humbled him at home in October 2019 and waited two years longer for victory at the San Siro.

The visitors exactly repeated the situation that decided the Roman derby on Saturday. Argentina’s Dybala found Mancini’s head from a corner kick and he sent the ball into the net. Just before that, the home coach Pioli vehemently demanded that the corner be played from the goal for the previous offside, but he only received a yellow card.

Benfica set a new record for the competition by advancing to the quarter-finals of the Europa League for the sixth time, and after a 2-1 win over Olympique Marseille, they have reached the semi-finals, where they last played ten years ago. Rafa Silva and Argentina’s Di María took care of the goals.

The top scorer of the Europa League, Aubameyang from Gabon, gave hope for a revenge with his tenth goal. The match in Lisbon confirmed the crisis of the French club, which came out empty-handed three times in a row and the cup rungs are moving away from it. The change of coach in February only had a short-term effect, and the new coach Gasset is already under pressure. The only thing that can save him is progress to the semi-finals.

The return leg is in a week’s time, with the final to be played in Dublin on May 22, with the winner qualifying directly for the Champions League group stage.

The opening match of the quarter-finals of the European Football League: AC Milan – AS Roma 0:1 (0:1) Goal: 17. Mancini. Liverpool – Atalanta Bergamo 0:3 (0:1) Goals: 38. and 60. Scamacca, 83. Pasalič .Benfica Lisbon – Olympique Marseille 2:1 (1:0) Goals: 16. Rafa Silva, 52. Di María – 67. Aubameyang.

Leverkusen – West Ham 2:0, Leverkusen celebrates after the Czech match. The veteran caught Schick, but he was short on jokers

Leverkusen (from our reporter) – From the first minute, all Czechs who were available ran onto the lawn of the packed BayArena. In the colors of Leverkusen, Matěj Kovář and Patrik Schick started, on the other side, Vladimír Coufal and Tomáš Souček. Only the injured forward of the German national team Adam Hložek was missing.

Both Leverkusen compatriots got up to operating temperature quickly. After seven minutes, Schick was responsible for the first chance of the leader of the German league, but goalkeeper Lukasz Fabiański eliminated a skilful run with his foot. A moment later, Kovář made a routine save after a break by West Ham and a shot by Kudus.

Leverkusen striker Patrik Schick and his shot attempt in the match against West Ham.

After that, they launched the home offensive carousel and practically did not lend the ball to the opponents until the break. But the wizard Fabiański refused to capitulate.

Shelling Amine Adli? The famous robinsonade. Alex Grimaldo’s cannon? Another tiger jump, only to the opposite side. Schick’s low shot, heading squarely into the bottom corner? Nothing again. The Polish veteran embellished the phenomenal first half with a strike against Edmond Tapsoba’s shot from outside the box. It was goalless at halftime thanks to the goalie, who will celebrate his thirty-ninth birthday next Thursday.

The second act was also in the spirit of the home team’s optical pressure, but against an honest defense at first they got into fewer shooting positions. Coufal also took away the hearty approach, whose sharp cross from Alex Grimaldo hit the temple and doctors had to rush to the field.

Vladimír Coufal thanks the fans.

Leverkusen then started to press West Ham again. Schick came close to breaking through the solid defense twenty minutes before the end, but Fabiański shone even against his header under the crossbar.

Just when it seemed that Leverkusen would not see joy, the BayArena erupted in cheers. Substitute Jonas Hofmann found a bounced ball in the penalty area and from the first shot through the thick wall of the visiting bodies, even the bullet-proof veteran. Moments later, Johnatan Tah could have added a safety, but his shot was kicked from the goal line by Souček.

Leverkusen’s players celebrate the goal.

However, the dominant Leverkusen doubled their lead anyway. Victor Boniface, who replaced Schick at the point with a quarter of an hour to go, headed Hofmann’s cross in stoppage time to close the scoring. The German team is thus two goals closer to the semi-finals.

José Mourinho Quits AS Rome After Series of Bad Results: European Conference League Victory Not Enough

After a series of bad results, coach José Mourinho quit AS Rome football players. The Portuguese coach led the “Giallorossi” from May 2021 and won the European Conference League with them, his contract would expire after the season. The Italian club announced the change on the bench on its website.

The Roman team has won only once in the last six matches of the Italian league, lost three times in a row away from home and is only in ninth place in the table. The last time he lost was 1:3 at the AC Milan stadium on Sunday. AS loses a whopping 22 points to leaders Inter Milan after 20 rounds.

In 2022, Mourinho’s men dominated the first year of the Conference League, in the following season the 60-year-old coach led the team to the final of the Europa League, where the Romans lost to FC Sevilla after a penalty shootout.

The latter graduated in a direct fight for first place, in which FC Villarreal triumphed at Stade Rennes 3:2 and advanced directly to the round of 16.
